Question about 2003 BMW 325

A/C COMPRESSOR DOES NOT COME ON

COMPRESSOR IS OK BUT WILL NOT KICK ON . COULD IT BE THE PRESSURE SWITCH, AND IF SO IS THERE A QUICK TEST. IT HAS 3 PRONGS ON WIRE, IN THE PAST I HAVE JUMPED PRESSURE SWITCH WITH PAPERCLIP TO SEE IF THAT WAS THE PROBLEM, BUT OTHER SWITCHES ONLY HAD 2 PRONGS. ANY SUGGESTIONS. BEFORE THIS PROBLEM STARTED, AC WOULD STOP BLOWING COLD OCCASIONALLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING THEN COME BACK ON.

Sounds like your a/c is freezing up. i would recommend checking your charge level (a/c recovery machine) also ispect lines to see if there is a restriction (a/c line has frost on it) the a/c control panel could be defective or even the engine control computer (receiives activate signal from the a/c control panel and activates the compressor) i haven't seen many pressure switches fail on bmw's but if you wanted to jump it to test i would try all possible ways of shorting it out, its a 5 volt signal from the control panel. but it doesn't sound like the switch has failed. my recommendation is to recover the system and pull a vacuum on it for 30 minutes and start your diagnosis with the correct fill level. 1.63 lds of r134a

A/C Compressor won't turn on Can jump compressor from battery and compressor comes on & cools. Hi pressure switch checks out ok and 12 volts going to hi pressure switch no voltage to compressor

the high pressure switch kicks the compressor off when the pressure rises, the low pressure switch kicks it on, check that switch, unplug the wire and use a continuity meter to see if the switch functions, also check for power getting to the plug itself

I have a 2002 dodge stratus r/t coupe (mitsubishi) with the 3.0L 24valve V6, and auto transmission. Lately the A/C will operate normally sometimes, and sometimes it will not blow cold due to the compressor...

The hvac relay is located in the power distribution box under the hood in position #60. You can swap another 5 terminal relay to test. You did not say what your pressure readings were, but you could have a bit of moisture or a little air trapped in the system causing the intermittent operation. To eliminate this, have the system evacuated with a deep vacuum, then recharged to mfrs. capacity. I hope this helps.

My 2004 chevy 1500 v8 air compressor will not kick in. I have jumped the low pressure switch and the compressor will not come on. i have changed the temperature controller and still won't kick in. i...

If the compressor kick's in when you jumper the relay socket there is no problem with the electrical to the compressor an the compressor isn't locked up . You have a control side problem , the PCM - engine computer is suppose to energize the relay if no other problems are present . The proper way to check this would be to hook up a scan tool an check pressure input's to the PCM an is the PCM getting a request from the HVAC control panel to turn on the A/C compressor . AutoZone is wrong as usual , There can be codes without the check engine light being on . o'reilly's is wrong as well DTC P0530 (LU3, LR4, LM7, LQ4 and L18)
The powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM) monitors the high side refrigerant pressure via a A/C refrigerant pressure sensor. When the pressure is high the signal voltage is high. When the pressure is low the signal voltage is low. When pressure is too high the PCM will not allow the A/C compressor clutch to engage.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will not illuminate.
Diagnostic Aids
The air conditioning (A/C) compressor clutch will not engage under the following conditions:
• The A/C high side line pressure is over 2957 kPa (429 psi).
• The A/C low side line pressure is under 138-172 kPa (20-25 psi).
• Throttle angle is at 100 percent.
• Engine speed is more than 5500 RPM.
• Engine coolant temperature (ECT) is more than 121°C (250°F).
• Ambient air temperature is less than 5°C (40°F).
• Engine is idling at a low unstable RPM
Compressor clutch engagement cannot be used to determine status of the low pressure switch. The low pressure switch is one of several inputs to the HVAC control module for A/C request authorization. A/C request is one of several inputs to the powertrain control module (PCM) that control A/C compressor clutch engagement.
To accurately determine what pressure the A/C low pressure switch opens and closes at use Kent Moore GE-47742 which will allow the technician to measure the switch point pressure at the switch.
Using a scan tool, monitor the "low pressure switch" status while monitoring the "low side" pressure at the switch to determine the switch points of the low pressure switch.
The low pressure switch "connector seal" must be removed before plugging it into the switch for testing. The "plunger effect" of plugging the connector with seal into the switch induces a pressure on the back side of the switch, this pressure will skew the opening/closing characteristics of the switch 5-10 psi until the pressure bleeds off. The time required for the connection induced pressure to bleed off can take 20 minutes or longer

Do you have the proper diagnostic tools ? Factory scan tool , A/C gauges ? You best bet , take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop !!

I have a 1996 geo tracker I cant get the compressor to run I have relpaced the compressor relay which dosent help. freon is ok compressor cluch kicks in when direct wired.

does the compressor run when bypass the compressor thermal cutout switch on the compressor? here is the part number and a picture.
also does it run when u bypass/jump the compressor cycling switch? it is located in the low side of the sytem, thios is the line that is the larger of the two, hwere is the part # and picture.

1. compressure cutout switch (3 diff ones used)

My AC compressor on a 99 V6 Cougar does not stay on for more than 3 seconds at a time. The charge is ok but the compressor kicks out 2-3 sec after it starts. I think it is the capacitor????

no its not the capacitor.
put more freon in it untill it stops cycling on and off.
thats the low pressure switch keeping the comp from killing it self on the suchion side.

it needs more freon .

I'm not absolutely sure on this one, but many compressors have a low pressure and a high pressure cut off switch. The low pressure switch monitors to make sure there is enough refrigerant in the system. Too low and it cuts off because otherwise your system will ice up (go figure that one out!) The high pressure switch is there to protect from clogs in the system causing damage to the compressor or other system components.

You should have a qualified professional check the system and both of those sensors. You most likely have a clog in the system which can be caused by a broken desiccant bag or a compressor that is beginning to self destruct and some piece of metal is clogging the system in a hose or at the orifice tube.

In any case you need professional help here...
