Question about 1996 Ford Taurus
Need recomendations/assistance regarding Body Work/Painting. Hello Fellow FixYa's! I have an novice level of experience patching and re-painting vehicles. I have not however experienced having to paint on parts directly against weather stripping or window molding. My issue is the Roof Pillars (C-Pillars?) on my 1996 Taurus have gone from rust to starting stages of rot, and I must address this. As you know, the metal of the pillars is shrouded by the Windshield seal. Sanding to bare metal, priming graciously, painting, sanding, painting, clearing, sanding, clearing.... ETC. Will this entire process be null due to the metal under the windshield seal needing to be addressed as well? That is to say, would painting this area only trap in the moisture of the rusting area under the windshield seal, causing increased corrosion? I realize that I may have these terms all mix-matched, and that this is complicated to understand since I have very little idea on what I am talking about. I am simply hoping for some pointers before I attempt to patch this up. It is my intention to use this method as an extension of 6 months to a 1 year before having to actually address the issue of professionally re-painting the car. Thanks for any and all suggestions and comments.
I don't think you can hurt it by sealing it from the outside. Your issue is the inside of the frame. The pillar is not airtight. Most of what you can use will smell for years if you spray WD 40 inside to displace moisture.
You might consider taking it to All-American car franchises or equivalent. They drill and plug body areas routinely to spray inside door panels, tailgates, etc. It would inhibite rust and unless you actually replace the metal when you want to paint the car, theres not much else you can hope to do. I live in the Michigan rustbelt area.
