Question about 1997 Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

Buick lesabre 3.8 1997. the other day it just died like you shut the key off. I checked spark and it is hot very hot. I checked fuel pressure. I have 45 to 50 psi. I did get it to run but it ran rough and was back firing threw the intake. I am think timing either cam or ignition. I don't know if this engine has a belt or chain. I was thinking about the ignition module. I know voltage can effect the newer engines. I hooked it to a charger and also had jumpers to another vehicle at the same time to insure I had plenty of volts and amps. I hooked up my scan tool. I don't have any store or active codes. I tried to monitor my inputs and all appear correct.

Im going to guess you were in traffic or at a stop light then proceeded to drive and the car just died out? Have seen this before, most times in the buick regal. Try something please, in the same situation as its dying out it, try to slowly creep forward every 15 secs or so. if this constant creeping forward helps to reprieve the issue, look to the ecm being overloaded when voltage isnt constantly expelled.

SOURCE: buick lesabre nightmare

Need to get a scan tool and look at the data stream while it is running for alot more info. Also any trouble codes.Sounds like initially, the engine isn't getting any fuel.I would have a pressure gauge connected to the fuel rail on the engine,so i could monitor the fuel pressure while all this is going on.Items to look at on the data stream would be timing, what timing is the PCM commanding for the engine. Also, have you checked for continuos power feed to the coils during this no start condition, and fire at the plugs while cranking. You could possibly still have spark, but maybe it is extremely weak?I have seen bad ignition switches cause weird problems before too. Many things power up through the ignition switch, just a thought.Have also seen bad PCM's cause strange problems..38 volts is a little on the low side for GM.Usually see those at,at least .50 and up,and rise steadily while pressing the throttle,up to just under 5.0 volts.Potentiometer with 5 volt supply.Vacuum leak can be checked with engine running at a steady idle speed, spray brake cleaner all around the intake manifold and listen for engine speed change.

SOURCE: Buick Regal dying

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.

First thing to do is check for spark at any of the sparkplugs then check the fuel pressure it should be 48-55 psi with the key on and the engine off. There should be a fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail to connect a gauge to.

check the fuel pressure from fuel pump it may be bad. its a possibility that the coils maybe getting hot and shutting down engine. but check the fuel pump relay in fuse box. to see if this is your problem. it could be getting hot and shutting down, just replace it.is the check engine light on ! if so you can go to auto-zone and they will scan it for free of charge. to find problem code. with OBD-II scanner. good-day !!

this issue sounds like u have a bad ignition control module, located directly under ur coilpak. thats wat they do wen they get hot aftr driving a while, shut off while driving(u must b loosing spark to ur plugs)an restarting wen cooled off. one way to check this for urself would b to purchase a spark checker at autozone or pepboys fairly inexpensive, an wen ur car dies, open the hood remove one sparkplug wire install tester between plug an wire, or wire an a good ground an have someone crank engine while u look at the tester bulb,if it lights up an pulses uspark is good,if it doesnt lite up at all while cranking engine ur spark is gone an thats ur problem possibly crank a sensor or the ignition module we mentioned earlier. try mounting the spark checker before the engine dies so u know wat a good spark will look like on that checker..... hope this helps good luck

While it is acting up check for spark at the spark plugs. You want to do this after it dies and will not start. If spark is good then check fuel pressure. The fuel pressure should be 48-55 psi with the key on and engine off.Let me know what you find Good luck.

do you get fuel pump pressure, should be about 40 psi what about compression and spark on a saturn would be stronger due to many reasons one of which being different voltage of coils

1993 Buick LeSabre surges and almost dies intermittently

Check fuel rail pressure.

Add fuel to beyond 1/2 tank.

A weak fuel pump do not like to ran low on gas.

When was the last gas filter and fuel pump change?

90-120,000 miles is the typical change out.

Fuel pump like to quit on a HOT day.

Test the pressure and see is it within specification.

Good luck

Wont start

spark and fuel pressure at the times while it not starting? I hope so.
Will it start if you spray carb cleaner in the intake? If so we are dealing with an Injector issue Several injectors could be failing when hot It's very common also you need to hae a NOID light to verify that the injectors are being PULSED by the ECM if you have NOID and spark and fuel pressure then the only thing to do is while its stone cold. OHM all the fuel injectors and record all the reading for each cylinder.
Drive it then once it will not start, quickly do the ohms test again and record all readings again and any readings that are lower are likely bad injector windings and you need new injectors.
