Tapping on a starter usually does not work. A simple, comprehensive testing with a volt meter will often reveal the problem (often not the starter)
If you must tap, tap on the center of the end cover. or on the side of the main casing (not on smaller cylinder with wires going to it).
good luck

if the starter is turning, but the motor isnt, its the starter failing to engage the flywheel. The rotation of the starter is supposed to force a gear forward to engage the flywheel, when that gear freezes up, the starter spins and the motor can try givinbg the starter a few sharp taps with a small hammer or wrench to see if it frees up

you may have to add shims to the starter, remanufactured starters sometimes are not the right replacement part, unless you put the metal shims in with it. the shims adjust the placement of the gears that turn the flywheel during the start sequence. it's a hit and miss operation sometimes, don't give up!! you can purchase those shims at auto zone or advance auto, or just about any parts store. also, just to make sure you're not getting a bad ground add a ground wire to one of your starter bolts, ground it to your frame. hope this helps and thank you for choosing

suggest a bad starter or a bad connection to starter, sometimes you can tap on the starter with a hammer and get it to start one last time.make sure cars in park with emergancy brake on!! have some hold key over in start position and you tap on starter with hammer to see if it even clicks, sometimes they will either click or even start, depaending on how bad the colenoind is on the starter. be very careful when tapping as not to cross out and hit the positive cable on the starter. hope this helps!!

96 Jeep Cherokee won't crank, but lights, radio, etc. all fully operational. Was working fine until parked to go shopping.

Check and make sure your getting power to the starter. If you have no way of doing this then take a hammer and tap the starter while someone cranks the motor. The wire is the small wire at the starter that you need to check for power. If the starter starts when tapped then replace the starter.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.

Jeep won't start has power to lights but won't turn over

The starter is a good possibility. Try tapping the starter with a small hammer while trying to start it. Sometimes the brushes in the starter get dirty and tapping it will jar them loose. If the jeep starts then replace the starter. If the jeep does not start, take a test light and see if you are getting voltage to the big nut on the starter while trying to start it. If it's getting 12 volts and the jeep does not start, then replace the starter.
