Question about 2006 Chevrolet Colorado
Have you recently changed the bulb? If so, you may have replaced with a single element bulb instead of a twin element.

Did you turn the left turn signal on or are you saying it comes on just by hitting the brakes and doesn't turn off when you release the brakes?

SOURCE: Rear Left Light
Chances are the ground wire is frayed or partially broken. You could cut the black wire on the bulb socket, crimp a new wire onto the socket side of the cut, and ground that to a bolt in the engine bay. If the ground wire was frayed somewhere, this will likely fix the problem.

It could very well be the lever itself ... you could also have a ground... check the bulb socket themselves for corrosion this is a starting point

SOURCE: Break lights, turn signals not
Without being there to actually do some checking, I'd take a look at the signal switch itself. (In the top of the column) First though, check the bulbs, as I have seen (but rarely) a filament in a bulb break and re-connect itself to the other leg of the circuit.
