Question about Chrysler Sebring

1 Answer

Idling rpm When car is warmed up and I'm stopped a stop sign/light, the rpm drops down close to 500 and feels like it wants to stall (it actually did 2 weeks ago when I had to make a quick stop-but started right back up). No check engine light has come on. I've changed the spark plugs and wires, cleaned TB (bore/butterfly, cleaned IAC valve, checked for vacuum leaks and nothing. I've read several posts where it can be TPS, but would that not make the check engine light come on? Any other suggestions. Its a 2004 Sebring 2.4L with 110K miles.

There is an air line at the rear of the intake check that the pipe is not blocked feeds from the sump breather can block up and make this happen.

If a mouse chewed the wire into you may need to check all the wires. It sounds like you need to check the operation of the idle air control valve and it's wiring circuit. Good fortune!

Do you have the idle speed turned up to keep it from dying? Because it is high. Check engine light on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks at the gasket under the throttle body? How does the car run under acceleration? You might have a worn distributor shaft.

You need the computer controlled idle speed control system run through an active test procedure, and yes unfortunately this requires a trip to the dealer in most cases as very few shops have the right scanner, but check around..

Low idle & vibration at idle

I don't know if this will help. Had a similar problem with a 99 Blazer.
Would drop to between 300 and 500 rpm at stop signs and red lights, would stall and shake.
Did all the same checks, replaced mass air flow sensor, replaced cam sensor, cleaned the fuel injectors but the problem was still there.
Replaced both #1 and #2 O2 sensors in the exhaust pipes and now the vehicle runs fine. The idle is back to a steady 750 rpm in all stopping conditions. The Mass air flow sensor and Cam position sensor get information from the O2 sensors.

Come to stop truck wont idle it shutts off

That's a very high rpm for an idle! It should be between 700 to 9oo rpm. This truck needs a tune up, at least!

The car hesitates when idling or stopped at light/ stop sign, and the rpm drops to zero then goes back up.

The battery was a red herring - it would not have anything to do with the problem.
Faulty spark plugs could cause a miss but probably not make the engine stall.
What you described is a classic example of a faulty idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body. The computer controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the intake. It opens the control valve to raise idle speed when necessary.
I would check the control valve and the throttle body.

Jeff did you figure this out. I am dealing with the exact same thing currently. Things to look at are Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF), Throttle position Sensor (TPS), Air Idle control valve. I have played with everything but the Air control valve. I tried three different MAF, including a ghost sensor (circuit to match ressitance). I'm going to investigate the air idle control tommorrow. Let me know if this helps or if you get it figured oot
