Most likely the oil pressure sensor is bad. Its located in the very rear of engine on top of bell housing area.

SOURCE: Oil pressure gauge reads 40 or half pressure

on general motors engines all the way down to 15lbs of oil pressure is acceptable i prefer 30 but if the 40 you have down is the lbs of pressure your in good shape brand new engines generally only have about 45lbs of pressure

The oil pressure gauge was working yesterday. It's not leaking oil or burning it. The gauge isn't working now. Could i be low on oil or is something else wrong?

Good idea to check oil level first. Next, check that wire to oil pressure sender is still attached. Next, try hooking up know good mechnical gauge to insure you really have pressure. If all good, short wire to sender to ground--if gauge come up, replace sender.

Oil pump ford explorer

No that is not the pump that you smell. You need to have a test gauge hooked up to verify that you have good oil pressure, if it is ok then replace the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge.

I have a citreon Xantia v6.On start up the light above the oil light flashes on and of for 10 seconds then stops. What is this?

It means the oil pressure may be low, have a shop hook up a test gauge and verify your oil pressure is good and within factory specs, if not the oil pump may be defective, but that is only a guess. Do not drive this until you get it checked or you risk damage to the engine's bearings from low oil pressure if it is indeed really low and the sending unit for the light isn't defective..

From what you just said, it sounds like the problem may be the dash gauge itself. I have only seen one oil pump act like that (mine) .... in that case the pump drive gear was turning on the shaft and slowing down as rpm increased but that is so rare as to be a non issue, especially when the mechanical gauge reads fine. I'd either replace the dash gauge or just install the mechanical gauge permanently on the dash. Doubt if oil in the plug will do that but you can check the plug, clean it and check the integrity of the wires going into it just to be sure.

The oil pressure guage on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee is registering 0. My oil was just changed and I don't see any indication of oil leaking anywhere. Could it be the sensor?

First off I wouldnt drive your car until you make sure that you have indeed oil pressure and that the gauge is a false reading, driving your car if in fact it has no oil pressure will severly damage your engine, but firstly i would check the oil pressure switch its located on the passenger side of the engine right back from the oil filter make sure the connector is clean and free from oil and corrosion if the connector appears to be in good shape take a paper clip and insert it between the 2 terminals inside the connector your oil pressure gauge should peak at 80 PSI that tells you that your gauge and all related wiring are good and in working condition, secondly remove the oil pressure switch and hook an manual oil pressure gauge up to you engine and start the engine the guage should have a oil pressure reading anywhere from 30 PSI to 55PSI depending on engine temperature if theres oil pressure on your manual gauge replace the oil pressure switch with a new unit, if you still have 0 PSI on your gauge then stop your engine immediatly and start looking at your oil pump and lubricating system for a problem.

Tryin to find low oil preesure problem before having to replace oil pump already replaced oil sending unit and gauge

need to find out the pressure the pump is putting out hook up a mechanical pressure gauge most use the sensor port to hook into and test pressure if pressure good than u may have a sludge problem where a flush might help-if pressure low possible clogging [sludge build up] of oil screen-[which a flush or back blow-compressed air -to clear or clean pick up tube and screen should help ]--or internal engine problem or oil pump bad

Oil gauge may be bad, you said you changed the oil sending unit, and tried a aftermarket which worked, so the other option is to have you oil gauge checked. The sending unit may be good but you gauge is not reading proper.

I have a new rebuilt motor with less than 100 miles. The oil pressure drops when the RPM's are increased. I have been told that this because the oil pick up has fallen off or is has some kind of blockage...

First, let's determine that the oil pressure sending unit is not bad. Can you hook a mechanical gauge up to the engine? If the mech gauge reads the same as your other gauge, you def have an issue. Either the oil pump has excessive clearance internally, a VERY weak (or missing) oil pump relief spring, or you have a severe oil pressure loss inside the oil gallaries in the engine. Some engines have restrictors in the oil passages to control the pressure. Doubt that this is the case here, though.
My best guess (and, this is a guess) is maybe the oil pickup tube is loose, or the oil pump is loose. If so, the pickup may be pulling air, instead of oil, and lowering the pressure. Get this fixed ASAP, low oil pressure will damage you new motor.

Hope this gives you a little light on the subject.
