Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 96 chevy lumina which I replaced the battery and had it jump started yesterday. The car ran for about 20-30 mins. I then truned it off and tested voltage which the mechanic told me both checked out to be fine test in the battery when it was off and while it was running so he concluded that there was nothing wrong with my alternator and a crank back up right immediately last night and then this morning I wake up and try to crank the car to head to work and its back at square one it will not start and the votes on and everything is coming back on again so now I'm at a point where I have no clue what could be wrong the battery was replaced and tested fine the guy also told me that the alternator was fun so what could be the next issue for me to look into thank you

SOURCE: Battery dosn't charge, alternator/voltage adapter test's good.

Did you test the Alternator on or off the truck? It might be a problem with the control system to the Alternator. The regulator need a battery feed to work, It is usually ran through an alternator fuse.

SOURCE: Electrical Short???

Has the stereo been changed recently? If not move to the cigerett lighter. These two are most likely the prob. But you could have a bare wire anywhere grounding out. Good luck and hope you find it.

Whats the battery voltage when you turn the key on or try to crank it? Have you checked to make sure the terminals are clean?

An almost dead battery will still read 12 volts until there is a load on it. Then you will see the voltage drop to almost nothing. Checking the battery voltage with the key on or with the headlights on will give you a better picture of the health of the battery. Since it starts and runs with a jump I would say a new batter is in your future.

If you havent replaced the battery I would start there. If the battery has a dead cell in it then it will effectively remove the charge that your alternator is putting out causing your vehicle to stop running because it has no power. I would jump start the car without the battery hook up and remove the cables and see if it runs that way. If it does you have a bad battery.

Maybe even remove them and clean them up.
Then try jump start.

1999 chevy lumina with a new battery that will not turn over. AAA can jump it and it will start and run for ever until it is turned off then it will not start again. Jumping it from another car usually...

because aaa can jump start it and you can't sounds like maybe the battery cables are curroided (dirty)
in-between the battery post and the clamps, clean the battery terminals and charge your battery as a loose conection can run down even a new battery

Chevy lumina 1995 van

I have a 96 Chevy Lumina with an electric sliding side door. A few weeks ago we started having problems with it. I went to work and when I got ready to leave it would not start. I had to have it jumped. Got home and let it set over the Thanksgiving weekend. Went to start it the Mon/Tues after and nothing. Let it set another week and still nothing. We jumped it again and it took 15 minutes to get enough of a charge in the battery to get it started. Took it to a battery store and they checked the battery and said that was the problem. We replaced the battery (it wasn't that old) and went home. A few days later it wouldn't start again. Could this problem have anything to do with the electric slinding door? if so, any suggetions on how to fix it?
