Yes...you will do more harm. This could be as easy as a shift solenoid which is not that expensive. Changing the fluid/filter is a must as well. Usually recommended at 60,000 miles.

Shift module internal to trans is not functioning properly. Take it to a good independent trans repair shop. Usually, for any internal, the labor is so high, esp for a 4wd, that you replace it with an entire reman trans. with a warranty.

sounds like the transmission is in "limp"mode it allows you to drive even though there is a problem with the transmission, the code 21 is probably a transmission manufature control code and not engine go to autozone and they can scan it for free,if you just had transmission fluid changed recently if you used anything other than what the manufature calls for like atf+4 then this is your problem, flush the system and do a fluid and filter change with correct fluid as by what the owners manual,or dealer calls for, don't rely on autozone to get it right.

SOURCE: transmission won't shift to 2nd and 3rd gears goes from 1st to 4th.
Doesn't sound like a simple fix. I would suggest having it serviced.

I have the same problem. A guy (not a mechanic) told me that it could be the matrix, which is expensive, or simply the water pipes. If it is the matrix, check on ebay before ££ spending hundreds ££ at a garage, I saw one for £60. I've got my pajero booked in at the garage.. Let's see what they say!
