Question about 1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

1 Answer

Hesitation under load around 5% throttle

In drive with the brake applied, given slight throttle hesitation occurs. It is timed as it hesitates for approx. 1 second, then runs fine for approx. 1 second. The cycle repeats over and over, only at that throttle position (~3 - 7%). I have been noticing it more and more preeminent as the weather is getting into 70's. Runs fine...-ish cold.

I throttle the engine with the brake applied so that I am not rolling down the road not paying attention to traffic. It does hesitate under normal driving condition, in any gear at any speed - just at that throttle position. I have cleaned neither the upper intake nor the ISC. The check engine light did come on for about an hour when it rained 3 days ago, and I have not had the time to pull the code yet. Autozone told me they cannot retreive stored codes, only the ones that are occuring right now, sounds like a bunch of you-know-what, but I wasn't gonna argue with the guy, ya know? So I am waiting on a buddy with an OBD2 scanner, but in the mean time I wanted to know if there is anything I can check that might be a common solution.

After unplugging the vacuum hose to the egr valve the engine runs much better. Everytime the valve would open, the engine misfired. Is it simple to clean?

  • Yevgeniy May 20, 2009

Well, after poking around with different sensors I still have nothing. There are no codes present. I did put a timing light to it and noticed that the timing gets advanced way ahead, something like 45 degrees when the hesitation occurs. the only time i see this kind of timing advance is when you burp the throttle, and only for one cycle maybe two. Not sure if this is a symptom or a cause.

Not advanced, retarded. The timing gets retarded. normally, for cylinder one, the the timing is in the range of 12 to 11 0'clock, depending on throttle position. during hesitation the spark occurs around 2 o'clock.

the valve is not the problem, the vacuum control for the valve is, once again run the trouble codes

get the code, 96 up systems that have a problem will record a code for it, clean the parts mentioned.

why would u throttle the engine with the brake applied? does it hesitate under normal take off conditions? have you cleaned the upper intake and ISC (idle speed control) motor? what if any trouble codes do u have?

1997 lincoln still need more insight on what could be causing the constant hesitation when I just barely touch the gas pedal..

Dirty throttle body will cause hesitation. Brake clean and a tooth brush. Clean inside around where the plate sets and the back of the plate. Start the car( it will take a second or two). Then rev it up and spray some of the brake clean in the throttle. Also check the air filter. Replace if dirty.

Slight hesitating on driving at 2000rpm and low idle speed 650rpm

Do you drive a lot, and often at the same speed? I had a long commute with no traffic and did this for years, and started getting a stutter/hesitation at a certain speed. I realized that it didn't happen if I changed my cruising speed slightly. It turned out that my throttle position sensor had gotten a worn spot in it from being at the same place all the time. I changed it out and the problem vanished. Just something to consider.

Hesitates -part throttle. 2-3000rpm.replace pump due to low pressure -replaced plugs cap, wires and rotor

try to test the postion of the pedal. You may have a dead spot on the throttle position sensor. Try at different speeds appliing the pedal to the same position. If its not speed or load related then it should show up everytime you have the pedal at say a given percent.

Perfect Idle, no Codes, but stepping on gas causes hesitation

i would try cleaning mass air sensor, its mounted in air duct between air filter and throttle body, they sell the cleaner at auto parts stores, also as stated bofore make sure the intake pipe clamps are tight and it's not cracked, if that doen't fix it i would investigate a fuel pressure problem either a weak pump or problem with regulator

Engine hesitation at start out

If the spark plugs have not been changed in a good while, it is time to do so. Also carbon buildup on the throttle blade can cause this issue. Use carburetor cleaner to clean it off. It should not take much to fix this. My Wife's BMW was doing the same thing. This took care of it. Her car has 72,000 miles on it.

Replace the Spark Plug wires, they burn through and short to the valve cover/cylinder head causing a miss under load, very common concern with this Mazda engine that was used in your Escort GT. Buy the best wire set you can find, or the problem will re-occur very quickly. Auto-lite makes a good set at a good price, avail at most chain parts stores like Kragen, Auto Zone etc.
