SOURCE: I have a Gm Performance crate motor. 350/290hp.

Ok,What you will need is called a timing tape. It is a piece of tape with timing degrees all the way around it and you install on your balancer so you can read the advance. This can be purchased from any perfomance store. just line up tdc on balancer with tdc mark on tape and wrap around your clean balancer. the other option is find someone with a timing light that will measure the advance.most higher grade lights will have an advance button that you push until Tdc is showing at timing marks and then you rread the advance on light.

Where is top dead center mark on crankshaft for #1 on 1997 chevy 3500 5.7L vortec engine?

I've always taken the # 1 spark plug out & with a second person hand turning engine, place your finger over plug hole to feel the compression.
then used the back side of a pencil to see when the piston is @ TDC on the compression stroke.
here is a link to a site that gives some instruction.

What is the normal operating temp in cooling system of a northstar engine?

For my 1997 Cadillac Deville limousine with 4.6 L Northstar it should be 196 to 205 deg. And top out at no more than 230 deg. F. Check multispeed fans for high speed turning over and antifreeze fluid level in overflow tank. Also, check for head gasket leaks through tailpipe which will show up as steam when you start the engine.

Replacing distributer suburban 1500 m 1997

HOPE YOU DIDN\'T TAKE OUT THE OLD ONE YET !!!!!!!!!! YOU MIGHT WANT READ UP ON THIS BEFORE YOU DO. BUT THERE ARE PROCEDURES, DISTRIBUTOR MUST BE MARKED, @ BASE/ENGINE BLOCK, USE PAINT, ROTOR MUST BE FACING #1 SPARK PLUG, #1 PISTON NEEDS TO BE SET @ TOP-DEAD-CENTER, ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE, NOT EXHAUST STROKE, IF YOU REMOVE THE VALVE COVER DRIVERSIDE IF V8, YOU CAN SEE #1 ROCKER ARMS. WHEN ROTATING THE ENGINE, MANUALLY W/WRENCH, BFW, BIG-FU-KIN-WRENCH, BOTH ROCKER ARMS WILL BE EVEN & LOOSE, IF YOU REMOVE #1 SPARK PLUG, THE TOP OF THE PISTON WILL BE @ TOP OF ITS STROKE, ALSO, TIMING MARKS WILL BE INLINE @ CRANKSHAFT DAMPER. @ 0, TOP DEAD CENTER. WHEN THIS OCCURS, YOUR @ TOP DEAD CENTER . DO YOU UNDERSTAND ???????? BY REMOVING ALL SPARK PLUGS IT WILL BE EASYIER TO TURN THE CRANK. ONCE YOU ACHIEVE & SATISFY ALL THE ABOVE PROCEDURES YOU CAN SET IN YOUR DISTRIBUTOR, ROTOR FACING #1 SPARK PLUG TERMINAL, THAT YOU ALSO MARKED, INSERT THE NEW DISTRIBUTOR EXACTLY LIKE YOU TOOK IT OUT, REPEAT, EXACTLY..........................GOOD LUCK!!!

Timing guides collapsed dropped timing chains.

if you have the v6 with the 4.0 OHV set the #1 piston to top dead center and then when looking at the gears where your timing chain goes look for a dot on your engion near the small gear and align the dot with the dot on the small gear. you will have to put the chain around both the top and bottom gears at the same time you might need to turn the piston a little past top dead center when doing this to get the little gear to sit in place with the slot on the back side of the gear. ( i just rebuilt my engion )

Installed new crate engine 1997 5.7 vortec, how do you adjust the timing? 1997 GMC Serria 4x4 1500

The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these proceedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This "static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing indicating the number one position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be static timed.

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

Here is a firing order diagram to also help assist you.

Set timing 1997 jimmy

Ok that's pretty simple Put cylinder # 1 on TDC= top dead center on the (compressionstroke piston all the way up). Mark on metal part of distributor (with marker) where the number one is on the cap( that's where the number 1 wire plugs in) Then in-plant distributor make sure that rotor point is pointed to #1 on the cap, turn distributor shaft until this is achieved or as close as possible try to center shaft so you can adjust... ****** or advance to fine tune after you in-plant distributor if needed. Contact if you need more help . Good Luck
