hmm. sounds like a valve got stuck open and blew a manifold gasket? I would check all your exhaust manifold gasket and your collecter gasket. If you continue to have backfire issues you may have a sticky valve.

SOURCE: 05 ford escape fuses
There is none fuse for the factory security system, it is integrated into a module commonly referred to as the GEM (Generic electronic module) or BCM (Body control module) module, this module controls almost all body electronic system, it operates the security system the wipers, Power windows, Windshield washer pump, Power door locks and Remote key-less entry system. The system module can't be disabled or you loose everything I just listed. The problem with the system can be quickly found by using a special electronic system scanner called an NGS, more than likely one or more of the tiny micro electric switches (inside the doors and hatch on the latch assembly of the lock) that senses when the door is opened is defective and depending on temperature and other factors sends a false signal to the Body Control Module (BCM), this causes the BCM to trigger the security system. So what you need to do is have the system scanned and find out which of the 6 switches is causing the issue, guessing is really not a cost or time effective option as it would take all day to do all the switches in the doors and rear hatch/gate. You will need a Ford dealer to the diagnostics on this. I am a 30 year veteran Ford dealer technician and I hold a master Mechanics certification in Ford electronic control systems fot here cars and light trucks.

I have had the exact same problem. I took it to the dealership and was told they could not find anything wrong, I drive it and it goes off "rapid fire" at times. A friend of mine has the same model and has lots of electrical issues with his. This is a bad model year for the Ford Escape.
