Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee ltd. The dash computer indicator showed a message saying service 4 wheel drive switch, plus it was heating up a lot so I took it to the mechanics, they did a tune up and told me they replaced the switch. While in the shop, I noticed they had a hard time putting in the switch, they explained that it is located at a very difficult (intricate) to reach place, not sure how to explain. Thing is that shortly after the msg started showing up again. I called them up, and the guy said that probably it got loose again. Is what they said accurate? or are they taking me for a ride? lol...Now other thing, the power steering fluid is leaking, and I've noticed that the wheel is getting harder to turn, (and right now I'm short on cash, so I cannot get it fixed right away), as I was checking this site, I noticed that someone owning a similar vehicle commented he'd used Lucas Power stop leak psf. Do you think it would be ok to use that on my vehicle, temporarily, at least until I have the cash next month and I can get it check and replace seals, or whatever service is needed, and possibly find another mechanic? Please help me.

You need to find a different mechanic. You need to find out where the power steering oil is leaking from.

Keep adding power steering fluid. Do not drive without power steering fluid as you will burn the pump out. If it is a slow leak you can keep adding power steering fluid but either way you will have to find the leak and get it repaired.

I have used lucas products for some time now, and , depending upon the severity of the leak, and what the actual cause is, It is the only product I have seen that actually works, without causing harm to other components. There is no chemical taht will repair a worn metal part though so eventually the leak must be repaired. No conditioner or sealer will repair a hose if system is leaking from a hose, don't bother. Hose must be replaced.
If work done by shop did not fix the problem they were supposed to fix, they have to fix it again or give you a refund. If you can't trust them, then yes...find a more reliable shop to do your work.
hope this helps!

Did you bleed the power steering pump after you replaced it. I know its a dumb question, but I have seen it before.Slowly move the steering wheel back and forth from stop to stop. Make sure the fluid is always full or you will reintroduce air into the system.

This is most likely the power steering pump that you hear. Check the fluid level to be sure it is full. If the fluid is full then the pump is going out. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have prablems i my power steering

My power steering pressure hose has a visible hole in it and squirts fluid when turning the wheel. How do I replace the pressure hose assembly? Is it O.K. to drive, if I top off the power steering fluid tank, and drive it about 10 miles to Autozone while it's still leaking?

What kind of oil do I put into the transfer case? Is that why the computer keeps saying check 4 wheel drive?

no, DO NOT use gear oil. The transfer case uses the same type of automatic transmission fluid that the transmission uses. Is the display saying "service 4x4 switch"? If so it is common and the 4WD indicator light switch is bad and needs replaced. It's only purpose is to tell the driver info center what 4 wheel drive mode the transfer case is in. This switch will not affect the function of the 4 wheel drive. The correct fluid for the transfer case is +4 automatic transmission fluid.

Computer light says service 4 wheel drive switch

According to the mechanic who works on my 94 Jeep it's one of three things:
1) Corrosion on the connector to the switch (which is located on top of the transfer case).
2) A bad switch. Part cost about $22.00 or,
3) A bad console display. he says they have had a fair number of console display units fail.
