Thermostat. check that and see if you got enough antifreeze to run both. if you dont run the car and fill with a 50/50 mix of anti freeze and water. dont fill raditator directly fill the over flow tank.

To start if your truck overheats in about the first 10 minutes after starting and you have a surging or bubbling noise then your thermostat is stuck and needs to be replaced. Also if your radiator coolant appears to be rusty your heater core may be plugged. So, while you are replacing the thermostat back flush the heater core also. Also check your radiator internally to see if it needs to be rodded and cored. It may have poor flow characteristics due to obstructions in the tubes from deposits and rust. This should fix all your cooling problems at once if you address all the above items.

Location of thermostat

Did you run the engine with rad cap off & heater (not defrost) on while topping up the coolant. If not, do it & let it run that way until your rad fan comes on & off about 3 times, then top rad up to a inch or 2 from top, and put cap back on, & check level in return bottle.

Car overheats occasionally

When you drive, the cars foward movement forces air through the radiator keeping the engine temperature in check. When you are idling at a stop you need a fan to do this. There is a heat sensing unit either on the engine block or the inlet on the radiator that activates the electric fan.Sounds like it may be the electric fan or the control circuit/sensor.Ask a parts clerk at any of the parts outlets to show you a picture of the sensor and the location on the car. You may be able to short out the connector with a paper clip or wire.If the fan comes on the sensor is the problem. If it does't it will be the fan or the wiring.

Car wont start

when you run out of gas it really overheats the fuel pump, it is very small and compact, and it needs the gas around it to cool the heat of operation, I will bet you have burned it out, check the fuel pressure while cranking.
