How do i fix this p1687 code no mechanical instrument cluster bus message?


i guess you are working FSM free (no book) on this complex car?
the factory service manual tells you what the steps are.....
and what the codes mean, and what checks to do ....
fuses are first.
reseat modules 2nd. (related)
are those all DTC errors. or just 1. of many."?
using what scan tool. does your tool show all jeep codes.
like the Innova 3160 does.?? or is your tool 1/2 brain dead... as many are.
one code. answer.....s..
first lets try to understand this code. (DTC)
which engine? 4.0L or 4.7L?

this error , i think does not mean both key FOBS are dead
but did you try both... car came with both.????/

it means the SKIM is not talking, (check all fuses with a voltmeter.
not just gandering at them......????) key on, test.
that be first. 12vdc on both sides of fuses, means they are really good.
it can also mean the Data buss is dead. PCI buss. its called.
The factory scan tool can see this data and we can see
if the data is Dead, or garbled or is never even sent.
you cant do that.... so...... its palm hits head moment.
if you had a real scan tool , and say lots of P1, P2, or other Jeep codes about PCI buss failure, i'd suspect that PCI has problems.
but if not, then just the SKIM is dead.
there are 7 computers on that buss. even the RADIO and BCM
if the bus has issues, the BCM will throw lots of errors.
Seems to me the SKIM is bad, or both keys bad.
i dont think this error is key related. but gee, you have 2, to try...
and takes 5min work....

Key on or engine running; and the PCM determined that it did not receive any Security Key Bus Messages over the Data Bus line for 20 seconds. This malfunction may be an intermittent problem.
Possible Causes:
  • Data Bus circuit from SKIM to PCM is damaged or it is open
  • PCM unable to communicate with the Body Control Module
  • PCM has failed, or the SKIM is damaged or has failed

1999 Jeep Cherokee grand..starts for a few seconds and shuts off


dies it have IMMO???? the IMMOBILZER?
id the light glowing, saying IM UNHAPPY?
1st google hit, of 6000 says SKIM failure.
been swapping major electronics ?
i see you left out the full story.
i did X and not SKIM is unhappy// what is X?

you have dash lamps acting funny?
diesel engine? or gas, and what displacement? 4.0 , 4.7
P1686


did the immo lamp glow.
did you scan the PCM and see if 1685 (wrong key code)

Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine started; and the PCM did not detect any MIC (I/P Cluster) messages over the Data Bus circuit for 20 seconds.
Possible Causes:
  • Data Bus circuit from MIC to the PCM is damaged or it is open
  • Instrument Cluster is damaged or has failed
  • PCM unable to communicate with the Instrument Cluster
  • PCM has failed
this means, the PCM can not talk to the I/P cluster puter.
comm fail.
even wilder guess is PCM talks to KEY via cluster so if cluster dead
so be key.
bad fuses ?

the FSm dont cover defeating any alrarms or IMMO less crooks read it. so...... google it.

1686 code came up on 99 jeep cherokee grand...what does this mean?


The p1686 code means :
No SKIM BUS Message received.
possible causes:
1. Invalid SKIM key.
2.wiring harness intermittent defect.
3.PCM DEF INTERNAL PCI BUS OPEN.
4.PCM PCI BUS CIRCUIT OPEN.
The first thing I would do is check the wiring harness unplug and check for loose pins then reconnect. Hope this helps.

Those two codes refer to a problem of digital communication between the Powertrain Control Module and the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (1686) and between the Powertrain Control Module and the Instrument Cluster (1687). The action taken of removing a plug from the BCM may have caused one or both of those codes. You would do well to disconnect the battery for a few seconds, then touch the two battery wires together (having removed both clamps from the battery), then reconnect the clamps to the battery. Then drive the vehicle and see if the same codes are still present.
If they are then I would find the communication bus wires (which are distinguished by being a pair of wires twisted around each other for their entire length) at the plugs for the PCM, the cluster, the BCM, and SKIM module and with the use of an ohmmeter or continuity tester then check that all the pins of the disconnected plugs that carry those wires are connected to one another (using the wire colors to identify the pin connections to verify continuity. Try gently flexing the wires while checking for continuity to detect a loose connection at each of the pins.
If the connections prove out, then I believe that it would be prudent to find a good shop which can use a diagnostic readout box to determine if the problem is the PCM, the cluster, or the SKIM module. It is too expensive to buy a module without proof that you have a bad one.

Diagnostic Fault Code (DTC) P1686 has a generic description of "No SKIM Bus Nessage Received".
Diagnostic Fault Code (DTC) P1687 has a generic description of "No Instrument Cluster Bus Message"

P1688 is either not a valid code for your vehicle, or the manufacturer failed to provide specific information for it.
Basically, what is going on here is that you have a problem in your computer network communication bus. Or to put it more simply, the "phone line" is down. Your computers in your vehicle are having problems talking to each other.

"SKIM" stands for Sentury Key Imobilizer Module (AKA security module). The Instrument cluster and the SKIM are not communicating with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for sure, and possibly also not communicating with the Body Control Module (BCM). There may also be problems with other modules that share the same data lines.
This MUST be diagnosed with a scan tool that can access the entire computer network. You must find out which modules can communicate with the scanner and which ones cannot. This is necessary to determine the possible location of the fault.

CODE P1687 - NO CLUSTER BUS MESSAGE. POSSIBLE CAUSES DATA BUS CIRCUIT SKIM TO PCM IS DAMAGED OR ITS IS OPEN. PCM UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE BODY CONTROL MODULE. PCM HAS FAILED OR THE SKIM IS DAMAGED OR HAS FAILED.

Hello lhernandez79,

The P-1686 is NO SKIM BUS MESSAGE RECEIVED.

SKIM stands for Smart Key Immobilizer Module.

One way I have solved this code is to disconnect the battery for about five minutes this resets the module.

P1685 Skim Invalid Key.

The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module contains a Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver and a microprocessor. The SKIM transmits RF signals to, and receives RF signals from the Sentry Key transponder through a tuned antenna ring integral to the SKIM housing. When the ignition switch is turned to the On position, the SKIM transmits an RF signal to the transponder in the ignition key. The SKIM then waits for an RF signal response from the transponder. If the response received identifies the key as valid, the SKIM sends a valid key message to the PCM over the PCI data bus. If the response received identifies the key as invalid, or if no response is received from the key transponder, the SKIM sends an invalid key message to the PCM. The PCM will enable or disable engine operation based upon the status of the SKIM messages.
