Question about 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

1 Answer

Loose gearshift I have a 2003 Santa Fe with the 5-speed manual transmission, the clutch was replaced about a year ago. Yesterday I noticed the shift lever had become extremely loose. It is still (barely) driveable, but difficult to find the gears. It feels like something has come loose in the linkage, but of course it's significant surgery to open it up for a look inside. Anyone have a simlar problem or a diagnosis? Is this likely to be something I can fix myself? I'd rate my mechanical skills as high amateur.

INSPECTION 1. Inspect the bushing for wear or damage. 2. Inspect the return spring for damage or deterioration. REASSEMBLY 1. Apply multi-purpose grease to the sliding parts of the bushings. 2. Reassembly is reverse of disassembly. INSPECTION 1. Inspect the bushing for wear or damage. 2. Inspect the return spring for damage or deterioration. REASSEMBLY 1. The transmission has synchronisers to help line up the gears when you shift from one gear to another. If this transmission has been treated rough or rawhided and speed shifted, these synchroniser clips become bent and turn up and won't allow the synchroniser to slid over them into place and hold the transmission in gear. Eventually you will have to replace them. You will notice if you take it easy when shifting, it will get easier. Don't get in a hurry and jam the shifter or it will just get worse and they will have to be replaced. I hope you better understand how your shifter work. I hope you can buy some time before you have to put a fair amount of money it to it.
Good Luck.

My 2003 Santa Fe will not stay in 5th gear! I have a new clutch!!! What's up??

This is not a clutch problem this is a worn part in the transmission causing this, have the transmission removed and torn down and inspected to see what is worn out and affecting the 5th gear.

Manual transmission at times has trouble shifting

2003 hyundai, should only have hyundai approved fluids in both the cooling system and transmission. If you take your vehicle to a transmission shop other that hyundai let them now there is a special fluid that goes back into the either radiator or transmission. Regular transmission fluids viscosity is to thick and will make shifting very hard. My Mazda has the same issues Wrong fluids go back into the transmission when I have had work done to it making the shifter hard to shift in cold weather. A Worn clutch can have the same effect.
