Brake pedal is hard when vehicle is not running, but is soft when the 2005GMC Envoy is running.changed the brakes and rotors?

This sounds like a vacuum or hydrolic issue. If The pedal is spongy soft while its running it indicates air in the brake line, or faulty master cylinder, or faulty brake booster. A faulty master cylinder would get hard after a few pumps of the pedal. Since the pedal is hard when it is shut down, it makes me lean toward the brake booster.

If you replace the wheel cylinders or brake calipers and did not bleed them properly, you most likely have air in the lines, If the rear brakes are drum brakes they need to be adjusted (if taken apart or new parts put on) or the pedal may sink when pressed.
1. If the brake pedal is soft when pressed down, the brake lines have air in them and need bleeding to remove the air.
2. a soft brake pedal can also be a bad master cylinder. Replace the master cylinder if the lines have been bleed correctly but the pedal is still soft or sinking when the pedal is pressed.

it sounds like there is still air in the brake system that has not been removed.you don`t say if you replaced the brake pads and shoes(in which case you shouldn`t need to bleed)or you replaced a brake line(s) or wheel cylinder or caliper.you will have to keep bleeding the brakes all 4 wheels(trucks don`t use bi-directional braking meaning right rear brakes with left front and so on).bleed both rear brakes then bleed both front brakes, was this problem there before you replaced the brakes(soft pedal noticed) and this is why you changed the brakes or the pedal was soft and the brakes needed changing.its possible that the master cylinder has an internal leak and may need replacing.

It sounds like master cyl. is drawing in air causing prob. also another test would bee too bleed out and get pedal back, now step on pedal and hold firmly and see if pedal creeps near floor indicating innternal leaking in master cyl. also have some one pump bakes slowly aand look for air bubbles in brake res. after bleed out indicating master cyl. is drawing air upon release of pedal.

I have a 1981 Corvette and my pedal has to be pumped to get a hard pedal. The Brake Master cyl. has been changed twice in 5 days the brake fluid level remains full. The brakes have been bled 5 times and on a...

First check each wheel brake cylinder for small leaks. If no leaks then the brakes have not been bled properly. Liquid will not compress like air, thus the reason pumping the pedal makes the brake pedal come up. If you had all of the air out of the lines then you pedal would not be soft. With your pedal going to the floor either there is air in the lines or fluid is slowly leaking. If it is a small leak on one of your wheel cylinders, it may be hard to detect without pulling the wheels off and looking. Small leaks on your wheel cylinders may never drip off of the car.

do not drive the vehicle. remove the hoze. replace it with steel line. rubber hoses are not meant for the high pressures of brake lines. it is expanding when you press the brake pedal. very unsafe.

Soft pedal,30 percent brakage

Air in Brake system need to be bled or master-cylinder is BAD. Noise in rear can be alot of different things NOT related to Soft pedal for example bent backing plate, wheel bearing etc. I would recommend removing brake drum and take a look at brakes in the rear contact if you need more help. Good Luck. Thanks for using FIX-YA

Soft brake pedal after rotor replacement

If they rebled the brakes and the pedal goes to the floor, chances are that the master cylinder is bad. Probably cost about $80-100 for the part if you could do it yourself
