Try turning the steering at a complete stop fullly left and right. If the steering is resistnt then you are in 4 wheel drive. vehicles in 4whl drive don't like to steer unless they are moving.

Select 2wd,4wd dash light is still illuminated, does this mean it is still in 4wd,if so what am I to look for ?

On four wheel drives turning is a real indication when four wheel is still on...4wheel is a bit more sluggish on turns. But, im a bit old school and am thinking trucks since nothing is listed. Most electric transfer cases have an actuator than engages an disengages electronically, but sometimes they get sticky and require a love tap or driving in reverse to disengage the actuator... you could also suspend the vehicle in the air and engage an disengage a see what is happening too.

Lincoln Navigator 4wheel drive 1998

See that this is an old problem. Some of the knobs could crack on the backside and allow the knob to rotate on the shaft without turning the shaft at all. If the knob is okay then go underneath the vehicle and disconnect the electric plug on the shift solenoid and Inspect for corrosion on the terminals. There is a problem which can happen if an indicator light burns out in the electric shift models. The length of the shift solenoid plunger is what determines whether you are in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, or high or low range. If the indicator light burns out, it changes the electric power and position of the shift solenoid plunger.

96 explorer disengages 4wh low but does not engage 2wheel

Does it shift to 4wd high range ? If so then shift to 2wd . What is going on here is the transfer case motor is stopping due to the motor position sensor has gone bad which means that you replace the transfer case motor assembly. But if you wish to make it a 2wd for awhile then remove motor and manually turn shaft . This can be done by raising and supporting rear axle truck in park remove motor turn shaft slowly with pliers and rotating the play in drive shaft. There are stamped markings on back of case showing gear positions..

In my 2009 jeep grand Cherokee there is no 4 Ed shifter. Is pressing the "ESP" button engaging the 4wheel drive?

On the Jeep models, ESP means electronic stability program which is the same as traction control.
There are 3 different versions of four wheel drive on Jeep Grand Cherokees with the base version being all wheel drive.
Your owners manual should tell you which version you have and how it operates.

1993 4X4 BLASER 4WHEEL DRIVE

Your blazer is equipped with a shift on the fly four wheel drive. That means that at speeds less than fifteen miles per hour you can shift into or out of four wheel drive by simply pushing the four wheel high button. If you wish to shift into four wheel low. Stop, put the transmission into park or neutral, and push the four wheel low button. Same procedure for shifting back out. Never shift into or out of four wheel low while moving. And be careful in four wheel low. At full throttle your still barely moving, you don't want to blow your engine up!

Jeep stuck in low four wheel drive

Put the transmission in neutral, emergency brake off, foot off the brake pedal, now try shifting out of 4 wheel drive low. If that doesn't work, drive forward, and again do the above, trans. in neutral, roll to a stop, foot off brake, try to disengage. What you're probably experiencing is called drive shaft 'wind up', and it is very difficult to disengage, but do the above and it should shift out of 4 low. countrycurt0
