Starter makes grinding noise - Lucerne Buick Cars & Trucks

Grinding noises from the starter are usually caused by a defective starter drive gear and or damaged ring gear teeth. I would suggest removing the starter motor and inspect the starter drive gear as well as the teeth on the ring gear for damage and repair/replace as necessary

The first thing that I would be suspicious of would be the starter. What happens when you try to start the car? Does the starter turn over? Is there a clicking noise? Did the car run fine after starting with the grinding noise? If it did, then the grinding was probably associated with the starter. If you pull the starter and the little gear on the pointy end is all chewed up you'll be on your way to solving the problem. If you're lucky, a rebuilt starter will probably be most cost effective and hopefully (usually) the ring gear will be OK.

my 2009 Hyundai Sonata was making a grinding noise like the starter was locking up i would move the key a little back and noise will go away everyone i brought the car to said it was the starter except one mechanic said its a starter relay switch on the ignition so i took his word on it and paid $100.00 the problem is fix so before you spend over 300.00 for a starter ask about this most mechanic will say if it not the problem he will credit the $100.00 towards the repair of the starter

Many times a bad starter motor makes noise like clanking, clicking or grinding when crank the engine. Replace the starter. Sometimes, if the starter motor is grinding the gears on the flywheel, the engine will have a metallic grating sound when you first crank it. Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.

You may need to install what they call shims in between the starter and the flywheel in order to align it correctly with the flywheel

the dealership is going to collect on the repair weather it is from you or vw. they always want to fix the concerns that you have but unless they are able to duplicate your concern they cannot correct your issue. Would you really want them be dishonest and just guess what your problem is or would you rather they fix it.
