Question about 1990 Dodge D150

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Dodge D150 that is difficult to start.

I have always been able to get it to start but sometimes I have to move it from park to neutral and/or jiggle the shift lever. I recently had the transmission rebuilt. I took the truck back to them and they made some adjustments and it started fine for a while. Then it showed up again so I took the starter off and had it tested. It started 3 for 3. At first it seemed like the problem was more noticeable on colder mornings. It is beginning to be more difficult to start all the time now. Should I just replace the starter even if it tests okay? Any help would be great.

Wont show P for part or N for neutral and wont start until I can get it to go into park

Maybe check to see if the neutral safety switch is malfunctioning. there should be an adjustment on the top of the transmission that is a small L-shaped bar that moves. If it is not adjusted correctly, the shifter may be in park, but the actual transmission may be between park and reverse, thus making it not register that it is in park and the neutral safety switch engaged to say it is safe to start.

If the shifter is on the column, try holding up on the shifter just a little as you try to start it, if this seems to work, that transmission linkage needs to be adjusted. Also try to start in Neutral, if this works, which not always on some models, then most likely is the linkage needing to be adjusted.

Hope this helps.

My car has a automatic transmission and sometimes it well not start unless i pull down on the park shifter sometimes to neutral is it in the shifter please answer thanks. ps 1990 mitsubishi montero

I expect the neutral safety switch within the console/shifter is coming out of adjustment or failing. You'll have to remove the trim pieces off of the console to get a good luck. Not too difficult I believe just a medium phillips screw driver will do.

Please let me know if this had assisted you.

Check the cable that goes from the throttle body to the small arm above the shift arm on the drivers side of the the transmission. Does the arm move as you press on the accelerator?

Sometimes shifting lever moves hard and you can't get the key out.

You should try make certain that everytime you park the van center the steering wheel. If it is difficult to get the key out or turn turn the wheel just a little. Not sure why but my 1993 has always been this way as well as my daughter's 1990 and the 1989 she used to have. I make sure to center wheel when I park.

There is a temp. sensor on the exhaust manifold that I just switched out on car that done the same thing it would start when cold but once it was hot and you killed the car it would not start back. When this goes bad its throwing the wrong signal to the computer that it is too hot and allowing it not to crank. This sensor was on the left side of the engine if your facing the car from the front. Also It can be tested with a multimeter to see if it is bad.
