Good question. It was never specified and I was wondering that myself. Hopefully they do not mean that it is leaking a qt of fuel each day, that could get expensive, not to mention, very unsafe,

  • James Oct 15, 2013

It's about 1 quart of oil per day

sounds like the egr valve has failed. and is blowing engine oil out the exhaust. could be the gasket on the egr or the internal pin. would need to take it off and see.

or failing that part of the head gasket has failed. check spark plugs look for one or 2 of them not the same color as the rest. will be light brown or dark brown end if head has blown.

or a valve stem seal has blown. will show on spark plugs as well.

  • James Coghill Oct 15, 2013

What Russ said above, but since EGR is a fairly cheap and common part, I'd recomend replacing that first if fixing by mostly guesswork.

  • James Oct 15, 2013

Ok I appreciate all your help

  • James Oct 19, 2013

Could it possible be a valve cover seal cuz there is oil around the spark plug

is the car smoking blue or is the oil leeking out ?

if the is consuming oil by buring it while driving the faults are either :

Valve seats / Burnt valves
Piston Rings
or sump compression which can force oil into the combustion chamber causing it to burn it and expel the burnt oil via the exhaust system.

Either way, its going to pretty expensive on a 2002 5 series.

The rack can leak i've done a few but is not common, the most common is the return line which is used as a cooler line also, this line is under the van the best thing to do is to clean oil leak and dry then start and watch for the leak inorder to pinpoint, hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2001 Toyota Highlander: Extremely high oil usage

the best way to find a oil leak is to get a better look go under the car and look at the oil pan for any signs of leakage open your hood and look around the valve covers and intake for leakage these are the normal places oil will leak from first. second i would watch the exhaust for white or blueish white smoke and third i would pull the plugs to see if there is oil being burned.

It is not a solution, but as long as there is oil in there, you are good. Just make sure you keep a good eye on it, just in case it gets work. Best wishes. If you need anything, let me know Bob. I am always here.

Put some paper under engine and see if it gets oil on it,if it does, then crawl under and find leak, also check the oil pan and valve cover gasket. Also check at oil filter and oil pressure switch next to oil filter.

I have a 2002 santa fe ,, i seem to be leaking power stearing fluid ,, i am re-filling it at least 3-5 times per day , could you please give me some idea what the problem could be . thank

Many things can cause this leak but the easiest and cheapest fix would be to check the cover on the refill site. If the refill resevoir is all wet, then your cap may be leaking.

Starting using oil abt 125K miles, abt 1 qt per 1200 mi. Dealer recommended repl PCV valve and hoses which we did. Repair had no effect and car now using abt 1 qt every 800 miles. No leaks detected.

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V-8. It burns oil aprox 1 Qt a week. The driver told me she sees white smoke from the exhaust when the A/C is on. I did not think the problem was related to...

I think, the bearing of the A/C unit jam and putting extra load on the engine or the belt that connects to the engine has dried out. Logically, A/C has no direct connection with the engine exhaust.

Losing oil, no visible leaks. 120,000 miles

Hm. In my experience if you lose oil at the rate of 1 qt. per 800 mi. it's going somewhere. Actually, if you lose 1 qt. per 1000 mi. and change your oil every 3,000 mi. it's under $10 in oil you have to buy to keep it topped off, and some places say that's there's nothing wrong.

But, your case is a little more serious.

I think that it's probably leaking past the rings and/or valves and the catalytic converter is eating up the oil, so you see no blue smoke, like you would in a car that has no converter (I'm assuming you have a catalytic converter on your car as my 1981 Honda had).

After 100,000 mi. little irregularities in the piston cylinders can develop, and seals can gradually degrade. So, this is normal for that kind of mileage, although there are people who get over 400,000 mi. on their cars with just regular maintenance and driving highway mi.

You might want to try one of those slower burn oils designed for cars with 75,000 mi. and above. That might slow the burn off of oil down to acceptable levels.

Good luck with it.
