I cleaned the egr valve on my 1996 Altima and now it barely runs and smokes. The egr valve moves freely and seems to work properly?

It may be moving to freely as it should have some resistance from the piston inside.if the piston moves to freely it will open strait away insted of move slowly up and dow with the speed of the engine.

SOURCE: Can the EGR valve on a 1997 Acura CL 2.2 be cleaned?

Sometimes you can remove them and clean the carbon build up off of them and lubricate it before you reinstall it. Make sure you can find a new gasket before you take it off. Usually you ruin the gasket removing the EGR. Good luck. Please rate me so I know how I'm doing. Thanks.

SOURCE: 2000 TDI - Lots of white smoke at cold start.

Sounds like your injection pump timing is off, an injector is leaking or a bad seal on your IP.
VW dealers have a horrible reputation when it comes to TDI's. Check out the posts over at Those guys are very knowledgeable - and the first thing they'll tell you is don't take it to a dealer.
You can probably find someone in your area that has a copy of Vag-Com (scantool software that vw uses) software that could look at your timing. It definitely sounds like your dealer was throwing parts at your car because they didn't know what your problem is. If I were you, I'd copy and paste your post from here over at

SOURCE: How to clean EGR valve passages in 1993 Isuzu Trooper DOHC V6

You have to the EGR valve (sometimes the Intake manifold to EGR Vlalve line also). After you remove it take a drill bit the about 20 % smaller than the actual hole of the outlet side and rotate the drill bit with your hand to dig out the carbon. Aditionally the line coming from the intake manifold to the EGR valve will clog near the connection to the EGR valve. I use either a single piece of copper wire or the wire that you would use to tie ribar together to clean the line. When your done cleaning take a piece of vacuum line and connect it to the diaphram side and **** on it... then plug the line well with your thumb. Grasp the valve and blow thru it... Air should blow thru it freely. Remove your thumb from the vacuum line and try blowing again.. No air should pass thru the valve.
Then reinstall the valve and start the vehicle with the vacuum line disconnected (but blocked off) Use another piece of vacuum line connected to the diaphram again and **** on the line.. The vehicle should die or run really bad. If it does this then you cleaned it correctly.

A 2002 jeep cheroke will start but wont stay running at idle speed

Two things I would check is how dirty the throttle body is and the egr valve. When the truck is idling the throttle body is barely cracked open and a ton of dirt on the butterfly can block some air from getting in causing it not to idle. just google cleaning throttle body. I would also check with the dealer and see if your jeep has an egr valve, Im sure it needs to be replaced and would cause the Jeep not to idle correctly.

Gmc yukon 2001 dtc code po404

P0404 is Exhaust Gas Recirculation range/performance. This is usually due to the EGR valve moving slower then it should (sticking). You can try to clean it (the rod will need to move freely and don't spin the rod, it will damage the valve, just move it up and down) but if it doesn't work out then look for price and availability for a new one.

I have black smoke blowing out the exhaust wen i step on the gas

I own a 2004 F-350 with the 6.0 Turbo Deisel...My wife has been driving it periodicll arround town and had mentioned from time to time it seemed to not want to get going. Well yesterday I went and picked the boat up and on my way home the truck lost all power and was spewing black smoke. After reading a few blogs I decided to pull the EGR Valve.. It sits right on top of the engine (from the front bumper looking at the engine) just forward and to the left of the oil filter. Two 8mm bolts and it comes off ( rotate back and forth while pulling up). The EGR valve was covered in soot and partialy in the open matter how far I manually opened the valve it stayed in that position.. After checking the price of a new EGR ., I decided a little home remedy was in need.. I let the valve portion of the EGR ( the lower porting, NOT THE ACTUATING PORTION) soak in fuel over nite. Cleaned the soot off and lubricated the valve shaft. Actuated the valve manualy an few times and it began to spring closed beautifully..A tad more touch up cleaning..reinstalled the valve and was able to hear a feel a noticeble difference in the way the turbo spooled up... no black smoke .. and running smoother... Quick fix..easy fix.. so easy I plan to make this part of my oil change ritual... pull the valve .. clean and lube... HOPE THIS HELPS ! !

Truck running sluggish

Replace the fuel filter and clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner. Just fallow the instrction to the MAF cleaner. The other thing to is the 1995 4.3 is know to have the EGR valve getting sluggish due to carbon build up. Remove the EGR valve and use Carb cleaner on it to remove the EGR valve and make sure it moves freely. Good luck and hope this helps.

Start up 1996 ford windstar ,runs great, get the van up to operating temp, shut off van and try to restart 15 mins later its very hard to start.....if you leave it and come back when it's cold it will start...

Not your camshaft sensor, it would not even start. Your going to have to get it scaned, but I'm thinking it may be your EGR system.

If you are comfortable performing some basic checks prior to resorting to the Ford Dealer then try pulling a vacuum on the EGR valve to make sure the pintle moves freely in both directions. While you're at it, make sure all vacuum hoses and system components hold a vacuum. Inspect the EGR valve visually for coking and contamination. Check EGR solenoids and the position sensor for electrical continuity.

Good luck and hope this helps.

I don't have steady rpm between 1000 and 2000 rpm

  • The EGR valve is vital to your car's emission controls.
  • When the EGR valve goes bad, it must be replaced.
  • EGR Valve = Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.
  • The EGR valve controls formation of noxious emissions.
  • Rough idle and poor acceleration can be caused by a faulty EGR valve.
