Question about 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity
I Bought a car. Replaced the Fuel Pump and Filter ,Starter, Spark Plugs, Ignition Control Modual. Cleaned the Throttle Body as good as I could...it ran for about 2 maybe 3 weeks without cutting off. It is alot of Carbon , you can smell it very strong. About a week ago car went back to acting crazy, shutting off while driving. But would start right again. But the starter went out after tring to start it so much. The starter was making a ticking sound when tring to start it.. Replaced it but would not stay started long. after awhile car died again wouldnt start and had to push car to house.. I dont know what elso to do...My boyfriend said it could be the Map Sensor or the Throttle Body Sensor....? Im stuck and tired of spending money..
Have the fuel pressure checked to ensure that it's consistent. If you have a cel light on check for those codes as well. also check for a vacuum leak and check for a stuck egr valve.

To me it sounds like a weak coil. spark plug coil. when the coil goes weak it will not spark properly and you will get a smell like you say. also when it stop working it will cut the engine off. would restart when the coil has cooled down again. but as soon as it gets hot again it will play up. if engine is fine when fist started in the morning when cold i would say it was the coil.

i would check your ignition system. you would need a meter for this but look for broke or loose connections. if it was a fuel problem i dont think it would just start up after 20 minutes. or you might try your ignition switch. if its shorting or something then ya well it would cut your engine off real quick

That eliminates the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Have you checked the fuel injector itself for an open winding or stuck valve plunger? There should not be a steady 12 volts to the injector--if good injector, it would be spraying fuel steadily into the throttle body. But at least the engine should try to run if poorly. Take the injector out, dry it off with air, and intermittently apply 12 volts to one terminal while grounding the other. You should hear a click from inside every time you touch 12 volts. If not, replace it. If it does, it may be plugged with debris. Try blowing through it in reverse with compressed air.

I believe it is electrical, and someone,
1.Has tried to bypass the use of the correct ignition key,
2.Or a fusible link for the starter is blown.
Does the ignition key have a chip on the side of it? The 1990 Camaro uses an ignition key with a resistor on the side of it. (Chip)
I had a guy install a radio, cut many wires, then wired it up wrong.
I found fusible links in the engine compartment that were blown, and wires that weren't hooked up correctly.
Took a couple of days, plus the wiring schematic for the engine compartment, and interior, to figure out what he had done!
My suggestion would be to find out if the ignition key fits THAT car first. (Dealer info)
Find out if it's the correct steering column.
Then look under the engine compartment to check out the starter wiring. You'll need 1990 Camaro wiring diagrams.
The prior owner bypassed the ignition switch with that push button momentary switch, because either/or a fusible link has melted through, or it is the wrong ignition key. (And maybe a different steering column complete with key switch!)
The 'Chip' on the key is a resistor, and THE correct resistance is needed to bypass the theft deterrent system.

Testimonial: "Thank you! Now it's starting to make sense, we will have that checked out if possible"

My truck did this after I replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to Fuel Pressure Regulator. It would crank and crank but never start. It's located underneath the black plastic manifold on the side of the injectors.

check the fuel preasure i do believe the injectors need some where between 55-60pounds to work the injectors not enough or to much and they wont shoot. try replacing the fuel filter or chech the preasure alot of the time its the fuel pump even when it's working.
