Question about 1995 Toyota 4Runner

Having troubles getting the heater core out of my 95 4runner , need to know if I absolutely have to discharge the A/C system first?

Heater cores operate using radiator fluid and the have to be drained unless you want a mess in your truck.

How to remove heater core in a 2000 nissan quest van


This is a BIG job, involving discharging the ac system, removing the dash, then removing the HVAC box and opening it to get to the heater core. Strongly recommend getting a Haynes or Chilton manual to have step-by-step guidance. Having another person helping will also ease the work, but expect to spend a lot of time to do this job.

possibly the bled door is stuck open so only the cold air from a/c works when on defrost vs closing to allow heat to cycle through the system as defrost runs through the a/c system

How to remove heater core on a 1994 isuzu pickup

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. CAUTION
    When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  3. Disconnect the heater hoses. Be careful not to damage the core by pulling on the hose to remove. Cut the hoses if they will not come off easily.
  4. Remove the instrument panel.
  5. Disconnect the resistor assembly.
  6. If possible, disconnect and move the duct (non air conditioning) or the evaporator housing (air conditioning) to the right to gain clearance for the heater unit. If equipped with air conditioning, do not disconnect air conditioning system until absolutely necessary. Refer to Section 1 for discharging, evacuating and recharging the system.
  7. Remove the instrument panel stay and heater unit.
  8. Disassemble the heater unit by removing the duct, mode control case, core assembly and heater core. To install:
  9. Assemble the heater unit by installing the duct, mode control case, core assembly and heater core.
  10. Install the heater unit and instrument panel stay.
  11. Connect the duct (non air conditioning) or the evaporator housing (air conditioning) to the heater unit. Evacuate and recharge the air conditioning system if the system was discharged to remove the evaporator assembly.
  12. Connect the resistor assembly.
  13. Install the instrument panel as outlined in this section.
  14. Connect the heater hoses. Be careful not to damage the core by pulling on the hose.
  15. Refill the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.

1988 Taurus - Heater core needs to be changed and I do not want to damage air conditioning system. What are my options?


The heater case will come out separately from the A/C evaporator case. There is no need to discharge the A/C system to replace the heater core on this vehicle. (That's RARE!) The steering column and Instrument panel however, do have to come out for either the Evaporator or the Heater core.

LOOKING AT HEATER CORE TOP HOSE COOLANT FLOW IN BACK OUT THROUGH THE BOTTOM HEATER CORE HOSE CHECK WATER PUMP BYPASS HOSE SEE IF IT GETS HOT.IF NOT COULD BE BLOCKAGE AT BYPASS HOSE FROM WATER PUMP OR WATER COULD BE FAULTY GETTING TOO WEAK PUMP COOLANT THROUGH SYSTEM.IF COOLANT GETTING HOT GOING TO HEATER CORE THE HEATER CORE AND COOLANT SYSTEM NEED FLUSHING OUT.

you only have to empty the ac if you have to remove the entire heater ac box from the truck to get to the heater core. heater core removeal info should be available at your library.i dont think you do but when you try to remove the parts to get out the heater you find the ac hoses moving with it yes.stil no additional work at that time as it would need to be done anyway. if you are afraid to start get the info you need from the libraey because there are many other things you need to know ! before! you begin.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.

Front heater core, what is the book time to replace?


The heater core mission. As for discharging the A/C system, I would like to state for the record that it is not necessary to discharge the A/C system to exchange the Heater core on an 98 Expedition/Navigator, just drain the coolant, remove the dash, open up the box that house the A/C system core and the Heater core, remove and inspect the blend door for cracks where it attaches to the actuator, check the blend door actuator then cut the metal lines on the top of the heater core off for easy removal, from the engine compartment pull the heater core lines through the firewall for easy disconnect and that is it, you are now ready to start the re-install process. One thing I recommend is while you have everything apart change the blend door actuator, especially if you see traces of where the coolant was leaking in the box. 9 out of 10 times the coolant leaked out through the actuator and it is just a matter of time before the electrical circuitry in the actuator quits working leaving you with no heat or only heat. Well moving on to other issues now that heat works and spring is near. Good luck and install in reverse, take pictures with your cell phone to use as reverence on things you took apart and Merry Christmas.

heater core is located in heater and ac unit behind dash. Must pull dash to replace and also discharge ac system.
