It is in the side cover on the valve body. The transmission needs to be removed to access the solenoids.

SOURCE: I am getting P0440 EVAP

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly

Possible Solutions: with a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
  • Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
  • Check and/or replace the sensor
  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

DTC P0449: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent Solenoid Control Circuit , your vent solenoid is opened or the wiring circuit is . The vent solenoid is by the charcoal canister at the gas tank .
P0449 Battery voltage is supplied to the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve. The control module grounds the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve control circuit to close the valve by means of an internal switch called a driver. The scan tool displays the commanded state of the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve as ON or OFF. The control module monitors the status of the driver.

What does code p0446 mean on a 2001 Buick Centry?

P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction The code P0446 is set when the engine computer recognizes a fault or restriction at the vent control part of the Evaporative emission control system (EVAP). The description of the fault varies between different car manufacturers, but one thing is common, the code P0446 doesn't directly point to a defective part; some testing might be required to pinpoint the faulty component. What can cause the code P0446: - faulty vent control valve - blockage at the vent hose, vent filter or vent control valve - open or short in the vent control valve circuit - bad charcoal canister - EVAP system leak - faulty EVAP system pressure sensor - bad vacuum switching valve (VSV) - stuck open purge valve (solenoid)

I have a 98 Buick century that needs a new evap emission control system how do u replace it exactly and will that solve my code p0446 code problem to pass a smog test

It likely does not need the whole system in order to fix the problem. The most common cause for this code is the evap vent solenoid. It is located near the charcoal canister. If you locate the charcoal canister there will be a larger rubber hose attached to it. At the other end of that hose you will find the vent solenoid. There will be a red connector with two wires (usually red).

When the vent solenoid is unplugged air should pass freely. when power and ground are supplied no air should pass. so what you can do is remove it and see if you can blow through it. Then apply 12 volts to one pin and ground to the other and see if you can hear a click. If you can not than the solenoid is bad. If you can than try blowing through it. If you can blow through it it is bad. If you can not check for cracks along the rubber hose in between the charcoal canister and the vent solenoid.

The other thing you should check for is power to the solenoid. With the key on there should be power on one of the two pins. The computer controls the ground so unless you have a higher end scan tool you will not be able to check that yourself. If there is no power let me know and I will get you some wiring info.

Here's list why your car is coming up with this code. It could be any of these things causing it.
DTC detecting condition:
  • EVAP control system has a leak.
  • EVAP control system does not operate properly.
Possible cause:
  • Incorrect fuel tank vacuum relief valve
  • Incorrect fuel filler cap used
  • Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close.
  • Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap.
  • Leak is in line between intake manifold and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve.
  • Foreign matter caught in EVAP canister vent control valve.
  • EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
  • EVAP purge line (pipe and rubber tube) leaks
  • EVAP purge line rubber tube bent
  • Blocked or bent rubber tube to EVAP control system pressure sensor
  • Loose or disconnected rubber tube
  • EVAP canister vent control valve and the circuit
  • EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve
  • EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve and the circuit
  • Absolute pressure sensor
  • Fuel tank temperature sensor
  • O-ring of EVAP canister vent control valve is missing or damaged
  • Water separator
  • EVAP canister is saturated with water
  • EVAP control system pressure sensor
  • Refueling control valve
  • ORVR system leaks
  • Fuel level sensor and the circuit

2002 Buick Century, when the tank is 1/4 full,

P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction

The evaporative emission control system checks to make sure there are no leaks in the lines that run from the gas tank to the charcoal canister and up to the engine. It also checks to make sure the gas cap is sealing correctly.
It may just be that the cap was not on tight and the code was tripped.

A dusty environment can also clog the vent line and cause this code.
Have the code cleared and see if it comes back. Some auto parts stores like Auto Zone can read and clear the codes for you.
Hope this helps.
