It's slipping... either tighten, replace, or spray some belt grip from an automotive store on the inside of the belt... Replacing would be best if it a few years old as it may be dry rotting...

SOURCE: car is making loud noise & wont idle

your timing marks must be off for the car not to idle. the timing belt is too tight, that is where the noise is coming from. rule of thumb is you should be able to twist the timing belt to just under 90 degrees on the longest section after the tensioner has tensioned and nut on pully it tightened. tensioners usually tension more than they need to.

SOURCE: 2000 Dodge Stratus - loud grinding squeal noise

if you have climate control the a/c comp. comes on
intermitently if the clutch is going bad thats a suspect also the idler pully bearing could be tired
or the ps pump could be binding.
one way to narrow the field is the next you shut it off
after driving a short time see if any of the is noticably
hotter than the others thats a place to start.
hope this helps good luck

1998 Ford Windstar. Loud grind sound when started it.

Question edited for clarity and fix funky punctuation and lack of spaces.

My first thought was that the timing belt had snapped, but you have a timing chain and it says this

Does a Ford Windstar have a timing belt or chain?
Best Answer. Your Ford Windstar had two engine options and they both ran a timing chain, not a timing belt. Belts need to be replaced at around 100K miles, but since you have a hardened steel timing chain, you have nothing to worry about. Your chain should last the life of the engine without being serviced.

Has the oil ever been changed. You saying there was a 'pop' concerns me but it may have been a backfire, or unburned fuel popping through the Throttle Body.

And then there is the grinding sound, but that might just be the starter on the flywheel.

The only way to diagnose is to call out a mobile mechanic.

2002 windstar made a loud noise and started smoking underneath the van near the front tires

Have the engine properly inspected as it may be a engine failure due to big end failure causing a hole in the engine block.

I have a 1998 ford windstar and every time I start it the belt squeaks very loud

That is most likely an accessory belt on either the power steering or alternator. Check them for wear, proper tension and replace them if you have to.

A LOUD hum from the right front while driving a 2001 Windstar. I assume it to b the wheel bearing. Is their another possible reason for this noise?

Could be road noise from a shifted belt in the tire. could be a drive axle going out. those wheel bearings dont hum 99% of the time when they go bad, generally they have a low grinding sound, espesially when you turn, and your teering gets a bit loose and sloppy.
also check to make sure that you dont have a broken strut that may be touching the tire..try putting on your spare and see if that fixex it,if so its a shifted belt in that tire.

Rear tires are making very loud noise, humming, its getting louder and louder

you either have a pulled belt in the tire or theres a separation in the tread belt and you need to have this checked soon as this tire could blow out at highway speed,if the noise is as bad as you say it is,jack up the van block the wheels and hand spin the tire and check and watch if it wobbles, has any flat spots, bulges wiggly tread in the tread face, just anything out of the ordinary

03 Windstar makes a whining noise when idling and turning. Sounds like it is coming from steering column. Power steering fluid level is good.

When you checked the power steering fluid level were there any indications of excessive foaming? There are three things that would cause a whining noise from the power steering. 1- low fluid (you checked that so that is not the culprit), 2- loose steering drive belt (you should not be able to press down on the belt more that about one inch between the steering pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley), 3- power steering pump bearing worn out.
