The two things you didnt mention are compression and timeing if you test and have good compression I would test to see if your spark timing is correct. you didnt mention milage but you may of have jumped time. if this was helpful please leave good feed back

remove the coil pack and look at bottom of it if it shows any cracks coil is bad very common on these vans if you have a noid light check for injector pulse on #4 if you have pulse and good blue spark most likely the injector is bad you have to remove upper plenum to get injectors out let me know how you make out

SOURCE: car only running on 2 cylinders

Cyl 2 and 4 are probably run off the same ignition coil. I would start by checking for spart on those cylinders.

It is not likely a fuel problem if it is only effecting 2 cylinders.

Do a compresion check, if Ok then timing chain is ok, try some throtle body cleaner trough a vac. hose while cranking if stars, fuel pump is out, another way if you have no codes the most poss. cuase is your fuel pump, check press is gauge handy

Diesel engine. In the morning when the vehicle had been standing for a day, when cranking the engine it will start smooth for a second and then splutters / running rough and not respond to the acceler

2 things cause these type of problem both are related to air is getting into injection system #1 loose or pin holes in hoses from fuel tank to injection pump #2 fuel shut off solenoid is fully seating allow drain back. back car up driveway or place rear tires on some ramps with a near full tank this should keep fuel in injection system see if it starts and runs better this way if so then test for these problems

1987 5.0 mustang turns over got spark doesnt start tones of gas in cyllenders timing is set still wont start. took plugs out and there soaked with fuel got spark and still does not run

you're a victim of a flooded engine. if it's got fuel injection then crank it with the gas pedal fully depressed; that's called a clear flood mode that shuts down the injectors while cranking to give the plugs a chance to dry off. if it's got a carburetor then you'll have to take the plugs out and dry them off manually. in either case you should pull out the oil dipstick and smell it; if it smells strongly of gas you should change the oil to avoid bearing failure because the oil has gas in it and is too thin to lubricate. I usually take out the plugs and either blow them dry with a compressor or put them on a hot plate to warm them up so if there is any gas in the cylinders it will ignite faster. while they are heating up I blow the cylinders with compressed air to eliminate any accumulated fuel in the cyl. before I put the plugs back in. make sure the choke is open and crank it with the gas pedal fully depressed for about 5-10 seconds and then release the gas pedal. It should start.

I have a 1987 nissan pathfinder v6 3.0 blows black smoke sputters wont go past 25 any suggestions, i did change the spark plugs...

not sure but this has a carburetor(to early for injection) and its supplying too much fuel to the engine.the carb will need to be rebuilt or replaced.if it has injection then it could be bad or dirty injectors a bad fuel pressure regulator allowing too much fuel into the cylinder.if it is injection then it will have a computer and the check engine light should be on and if its running this rich then the 02 sensor should be replaced as well.these are what can cause your problem and you will have to run the car hard for a while to clean out the excess fuel in the exhaust.

I have a 92 dodge 4x4 with the 318...Fuel Injected. When it is cold in the mornings,it just turns over and over untill after a few minutes it just fires up and runs great.

fuel injected vehicles have a fuel regulator,if this has a leak in it,it will flood the vehicle over night or lose fuel pressure so your cranking is raising fuel pressure back up or spiiting out all the fuel in cylinders til it can fire, check the fuel pressure regulator

1987 FORD FULL SIZE BRONCO FUEL PROBLEM, SHUTS DOWN

The only way air can get in the fuel line is if you have a hole in it! Problem of course is were? I would run the fuel line from back to front and back again. Look for any wet spot that you can find. You may even have to drop the tank to ba able to look on top. I would suspect the problem is in the line before the high preasure pump, being as you are pulling air into the system. I have seen leaky lines allow air in, but not let fuel out.

I would start with a fuel line psi test. then have your fuel acumulator.

http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/CIS.html

check this out and see if it helps. It sounds like you are priming the psi up when cranking then it can go. but when you let it sit the pressure drops and has to build up again. I a not a VW person myself but love tinkering, so let me know how it goes.

1987 4.3L starting difficulty

First off, I'm a great believer in the simple solution. If jumping the relay works, then replace the relay.

As far as a relationship between fuel pump operation and oil pressure, coincidence of operation.

If the new relay fails you, I'll need some more info:
  • Fuel Injected? If you turn the key on (not to start) do you hear the fuel pump come on for a sec then shut off?
  • Hard to start when hot, cold, doesn't matter
  • When it does start, does it idle ok? erratically? High? Won't stay running? Dies immediately?
  • Does it blow smoke? Black? Blue? White?
  • When driving, does it lack power? Stumble? Stall?
Hope it's the relay
