Question about 1991 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

1991 Dodge Dakota v-8 would not start...

So I changed the fuel filter and it started but the next day it wouldn't start again but if I waited a while and tried again it might start. Then I might drive it a day or so and it wouldn't start again. Its intermitant and driving me crazy. So far I have changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, drained the gas and cleaned the tank. Added heat to the fuel. A couple of months ago it was doing the same thing and I changed the coil, distributor cap, rotor, pickup coil. And came to the conclusion it was bad gas and a fuel filter fixed it finally....till last week and it is doing it again.

Not good...you did more than I would have done...sounds like its time to take it to a qualified repairman and have him diagnose the problem(s).

Have a 1996 ford explorer. It started the other morning just fine and ran good, that afternoon I couldn't get it to start. Changed the fuel filter and it started and ran fine again. Cut it off when I...

first need to make sure you have enough fuel pressure. Hook up a tester and check against the specs. if its too low, then your probably looking at a fuel pump. By replacing the filter, you allowed more fuel to flow. Also, make sure you are getting spark and injector pulse.

Clogged fuel filter

you must have an extreme amount of rust and sediment in your gas tank. you probably need to drain it completely and flush it out. I wouldn't use water to flush it as it will just cause more rust.

My dodge dakota 4.7 starts without any problem and runs great for approximately one minute. It then starts floundering and will die. You can turn it off or wait for it to die, and restart it and it runs...

Sounds like you have a restricted fuel filter that is causing your vehicle to start sputtering because it can't meet the engine's demand for fuel and then dies when fuel is depleted. After your vehicle stops running, fuel starts seeping by and you can start it again with ease hot or cold and you get the same results moments later if this sounds right replace your fuel filter.

Dodge Dakota doesn't start on first attempt. Seems like fuel takes a while to get up to engine. Once started it runs fine. When it sits for 10-15 minutes, I need to crank engine, wait 1 sec, then crank...

Is the pressure in the fuel system not holding? Fuel pump may be failing or the filter may be bad. Sounds like you're pumping the fuel system back up to pressure before the truck will start. Like when a fuel-injected car runs outta gas and you have to prime the system before it'll start again.

1991 Dodge dakota dies for no reason on hwy and smells flooded

Could be a couple of different sensors. MAP, oxygen, crank, or cam sensors to name a few. You will need to have it checked out on a computer to find out what it is doing for sure though.

A final addendum to the 1996 dodge dakota...

Here's the procedure for checking the fuel pump. I would 1st change the fuel filter, 2nd would be to scan for engine codes (free service at most parts stores), then check pressure (on a cool day, below 70 degrees) Good luck, let me know what u find. Curt
FUEL DELIVERY 1996 Dodge Truck Dakota 2WD 2.5L SFI 4cyl The Fuel System Pressure 44-54 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch)

Vent the fuel tank vapors by loosening the fuel cap and unplug the injector wiring harness from the main engine wiring harness. The next step is to attach an electrical jumper between a solid ground and the fuel injector terminal pin number 1. Next, connect an electrical jumper between the battery positive post and injector terminal pin number 2 for a period of time not to exceed 4 seconds. This serves to bleed down pressure from the fuel system. Install a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail service test port and energize the fuel pump. This will bring the system to a stabilized fuel pressure that can be visually verified on the gauge.
