I changed fuel pump. Now the gas gauge does not work

year/make/model?? Does the gas gauge read empty or hard full? If it reads hard full, suspect a ground problem at tank. If gauge doesn't work at all, make sure there is power to the plug at the tank. It is also possible the float arm may have become disconnected as some of these units are tight to get back in the tank. I have also seen new pump/gauge assemblies with defective sending units resulting in non working fuel gauges.

Changed fuel pump in gas tank 1997 buick lesabre now gas guage is messed up

Bad sending unit on the aftermarket pump, (take it back and put in a new one, have had that happen) or could be a bad wire connection, thourougly check your wiring first. (Most aftermarket pumps require you splice in a new electrical connector, check them out good first)

My gas hand doesnt move when i put gas in the gas tank

Check your fuses if they are all good you'll need to check the wires that connect to the fuel pump for signs of damage. If they look good the problem is the float in the tank. Its probably stuck.

1999 buick park avenue gas gauge fouled

You may be right. the float (sending unit) may be bad . i would also check the connections to sending unit and pump. this is located at rear top area of the gas tank.

the last thing that i have seen is the baffle inside the tank breaks free and moves around in tank banging into sending unit (float). when you remove the sender and pump form tank stick your hand into hole and make sure baffle does not move. if it does then tank must be replaced.

There is a ground to the frame in the rear area of the tank. i would look at that also. if you follow black wire from connector you will see it go to frame or to be specfic the unibody. i dont think it would be that but just make sure. if it were to be that wire you would have fuel problems but who knows for sure there sometimes two grounds, one for pump and one for sender. good day.

I have a 2001 ford taurus and it ran out of gas. It wont start after i put gas in it

  • Assuming you put enough gas in the tank to turn the car over (2 gallons is a good start) and assuming the gas cap is on good and tight then it sounds like in drying up the tank you put all the containments sitting at the bottom of your gas tank into the fuel pump sock and it is now clogged. Changing the fuel pump is that fix.
  • You may want to check the fuel filter too first before the whole dropping the gas tank to get to the fuel pump scene. Its possible the fuel filter has got really clogged and will not let fuel pass. They can go just like that if it has been several thousand miles since last changing it. The fuel filter for this vehicle is on the passenger side rail, about midway, on the undercarriage of the car. The fuel line coming from the fuel pump leads right to it.
  • Of course check the battery connections too.

Regards, Tony

The gas gauge is erratic. It bounces from full to mid way to empty. Especially when it is low on fuel, but not only. On a full tank, it works fine until the tank is about half empty, then erratic.

This is a failure off the tank sensor .The potentiometer with the float on the tank would have resulted in wearing OFF and so when it comes to the half part there is not connection of the resistance coil to the potentiometer resulting in this erratic action.
So change the float chamber assembly on the fuel tank. Make sure that all connections are tight.

Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New year.

My gas hand floats on my 2002 oldsmobile silhouette

not sure what the hell that means, but if your fuel gauge is moving around then you probably need a new float. It's located inside the gas tank and usually part of the fuel pump. Not an easy job, but possible...

How to change a fuel pump

remember you are messing with no fire, sparks and smoking allowed around car.dissconnect neg. on battery.then relieve fuel pressure by taking off gas cap.take all gas out of tank.undo fuel neck, both straps, hoses and any electrical conectors.take take out from under car.remove any dirt or debri from around fuel pump.there is a locking ring that needs to turn counterclockwise.remove fuel pump and bracket assembly.discard seal.clean pump flange, surface and seal ring groove.apply a light coat of grease to seal to hold in place during install.put seal in ring groove.install fuel pump and bracket carfully to ensure filter dont get damaged.make sure the locating keys are in keyways and seal stays in groove.hold pump in place and install locking ring finger-tight.make sure locking tabs are under the tank lock ring tabs.rotate lock ring clockwise intill it stops fully.put tank back in car.make sure all connections and lines are tight.put only 10gals in tank and check for leaks.put a fuel pressure gauge on the valve on the fuel rail.turn ignition on,but dont start.turn ignition on for 3 seconds then back to off.repeat this 5-10 times or until pressure is at 35psi.if you dont get 35psi or it drops back down check for leaks.if it stays at 35psi then remove fuel pressure gauge and start car.while running check for leaks.this is directly from ford motor co.verbatom.good luck.
