It most likely needs a new exhaust manifold. On stuff this old these parts are way rusty. If the rest of the car is good this is why the guy dumped it on you. If you can find parts they are spendy. Google dodge shadow turbo ,kits ect . see what comes up. there is aftermarket stuff, who knows you might even be able to get a bigger turbo

when bolts break in exhaust manifolds they never come out soak them down with wd40 days before you try to move them and a torch always helps . Shop trick, take a bunch of rags and have a friend hold it over the tailpipe when its running when you are up front listening for leak

Pretty easy to find exhaust leaks, usually can feel with hand before it gets hot while engine is first turned on. then go to parts store and tell or draw picture of where on the system the leak is and get gasket. You may break bolts too so be prepared to buy new bolts.

Turbo is leaking oil

I presume this is a 1.8t engine.....if so : If it is an internal, engine smoking problem.....
you need to replace the turbo soon otherwise the catalytic converter will plug up and engine will loose power.

If it is leaking due to turbo seal at scroll or oil delivery, it needs resealing. Check here for a shop near you: http://www.iatn.net/shopfinder/

Turbo R & R is an involved job and best left to someone who has the tools and expertise to do it.
Will take the average tech around 6 hours to complete and more if rust is a problem with the nuts/bolts.

Turbo can be bought on-line at Part Geek or other VW turbo specialist sites.

Torque specs for the trans pan bolts 1990 ford probe automatic?

The tightening is less torque, buyt rather gasket and pan squish.... barley gets tight, but too much and leaks happen.

Be certain to reform the pan bolt holes before you replace the pan.

So tightening happens evenly and stop just as the gasket shows deformation. This is after even tightening 2 or 3 steps....
