THE CAR WON'T START. THE ''ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM'' LIGHT FLASHES AND THE CAR WON'T START. AFTER A WHILE IT STARTS. HOW DO I AVOID IT NOT STARTING WHEN I WANT IT TO?

Start with using a different key if available. Faults occasionally occur within the chip in the key

The anti-theft system will keep the car from being driven, so I would start there. You may need to reset the anti-theft or check the ignition key for problems.

Absolutely! If the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) "thinks" you are trying to steal the car, it is SUPPOSED to keep it from starting. The problem is that the PATS thinks you are a car theif when you are not.
Below is a table straight out of the service manual for your vehicle. Please note that the FIRST action that must be taken for any PATS system malfunction is to scan the computer system for fault codes.

99 chevy cavalier theft system light on steady, car wont crank.


My 2000 cavalier has done this for 6 months. You take your key out then open your door, wait ten minutes and the system resets itself and the car will start-annoying you bet!!!

Try pulling the fuse for the anti theft system and starting. If the car starts normally, then the problem is with the theft system. The theft system will reset itself after a period of time.
