Check to make sure the ignition pick up coil is working, does it have points or electronic ignition ?

  • GQ-ROD Oct 14, 2013

You should check out forums devoted to older f series trucks there is a great one with people who have a ton of experience with them i just don't know which one it is, been years since i had my old f250. goodle f250 truck forums you should come up with a few. They are free to join. Hope this helps.

  • GQ-ROD Oct 14, 2013

oops, meant to write Google f250 forums

  • Geoffrey loo Oct 14, 2013

Thanks I'll check google for that and it has an 8 fin sprocket with a pick up sensor in the distributor

  • GQ-ROD Oct 15, 2013

Ok so you have electronic ignition chances are the pickup coil may not be working or the ignition control module may not be firing. But find the forum and they will be able to help you more specificly.

Hi there, i have placed new coils and spark plugs also got new air-flow meter sensor new battery and car does not crank over please help

Hi does the motor turn with key but doesn't start?, If so take a spark plug out and replace it back into the spark plug lead and earth it onto a steel part of the body(make sure it's touching something steel). Have somebody turn the key to see if your getting spark. If you have spark then you have a fuel blockage but if you don't have spark but have new coils and battery then it could be a loose wire in the coil harness meaning electrical......
You say car does not crank over, If you mean you turn the key and motor doesn't turn then it's electrical, so no spark OR motor doesn't turn you're better off getting an auto electrician but if you have spark it's fuel problem and you need a mechanic... Sorry and good luck......

What could cause a1991 suzuki samurai to have no fire from a new coil?

no spark from coil directly?
is the cam turning, is the dizzy rotor spinning. ????

check all fuses first. Ig-coil, FI and dome.
then using diagnostic jumper wire or fuse, (as approp)
crank engine look for code 41 o 42.!!!

USA cars , answers only
our cars are all EFI that year.
no engine swaps to Suzuki G16A/B sidekick or tracker engines.!
1: engine cranks
2: no spark
3: The ECu makes spark
the CMP sensor in the DIzzy , (never fails if rotor turns, does rotor turn, if not cam belt igored and now snapped.)
the cam turns. the CMP fires. the ECU takes this CMP signal
and fires the ignitor next to coil and the coil charges, and release and BAM spark.

that is it.
the ECU will tell you when the CMP dies or the Ignitor fails
why not ask it.
1: key on
2: diagnostic jumper in place (flashes 12s for ok)
3: crank engine,for 5sec, not 1 ,not 2.
3: release key not off.
4: see code 41, or 42, BINGO !@!!!!

No spark from distributor

1990 , no spark at 1 spark wire pull? or all 4? or ?
what about the ignition coil, got spark there?
is the cam turning? does the rotor spin? cranking,?

if the EFI has power, DC 12v power. and all fuses good.
CEL lamp glows key on, is a good sign, on all cars.
and the rotor turns and the COIL is dead (ignition coil)_
then do the winkyblinky tests.

1: key on.
2: crack for 5 seconds.
3: release key, do not turn off key
4: read the codes from ECU directly.

bingo codes for no spark are.
4,5,9,15 (ask for help here)

the chart
yah gotta love OBD1, not fun at all but , im used to it.

if you get a code, we can go to the bad part easy
the FSM covers all this, in vivid details.

Check that your have primary 12 v to the coil when it won't start. Can there be a loose connection?Coil is inexpensive to replace,Does distributor have a capacitator? Small cylinder by points.Change it too.I would check all grounds and connections clean and tighten.Good Luck.

My nissan

If you have a 12 volt test light put the point on the positive lead to
the coil and the ground lead to a good ground ( Negitive side of battery ). Then turn the key on. If the test light comes on then you have power to the coil. With power to the coil confirmed have someone crank the engine and put the test light on the negitive side of the coil. The light should flash at a rapid steady rate. If not then your pickup in the distributor may be bad. If no power to coil with key on or when cranking you may have a bad ignition switch.
Another way to test for spark is to remove the coil wire from the dist cap and hold the end close to a ground ( 1/4 inch away) and
have some one crank the engine. If you get a good spark but no
spark to the spark plugs you may have a cracked dist cap or a bad rotor. If no spark at coil wire use a wire in place of the coil wire to check for spark. You may have a bad coil wire. Good luck. Neil W.
