Why, when I smoked the evap system with the key off and the smoke went smoke went Through the, Fuel Purge Pipe, charcoal canaster ,Canister vent shut valve, Canister filter and came out through the frame vent

What year car? , what model , cx, dx,vx? got DTCs/ what?
no DTC's but are diagnosing stink? fuels for a customer?
just a hint?

EVAP level 1,2,3? 89 to present?
there are 7 or more tests, 23 pages in my FSM. got that book?
and for sure one test is the purge that does smoke.
you must test all modes, to get them all working.
both parked, running and test modes (ECU monitor check devices)

You will need to remove the right front wheel & wheel well liner. The canister purge valve is behind the cover. It should have two tube going into the bottom and one on the side near the top.
You can fix it!

That is an EVAP code. its a vent control code. you can manually test it by powering it up if you know where its at. i cant remember exaclty where its at off the top of my head but its only 2 wires. using a volt meter you want to make sure power is getting to it, but you cannot activate it without dealer scan tool.hmmm if you can figure out which is ground and power when you give it 12 volts it should click. meaning your vent solenoid works and you have wiring problems or its leaking.

EVAP problems are hard to finde with out scanners. you can change the vent solenoid and hope it fixes it. but a code points you to the direction of a problem. hopefull its not wiring problems. in the northern states with snow. ice can pull out wires and also get clogged in the vent solenoid and lock it up. its either wiring or bad or a leaking solenoid. check condition of wires. if they look good try a vent soleniod.

if that doesnt fix it after a engine light reset and 2 weeks or so. then goto dealer. you need to reset it after repair. light will not go off on its own.GOOD LUCK

Did you check the block box connected to the vent solenoid? There's a hose that comes off it that appears to run nowhere, that's the fresh air vent. If it's blocked it won't allow air into the system which will set the trouble code. If that's clear, the vent solenoid itself is bad and needs to be replaced.

2003trailblazer code p0440 evap system changed the evap purge valve/control solenoid and still same problem


Testing the system an not replacing parts is the way to find the problem . Without knowing how ,using a factory diagnostic flow chart to go by would be best for a rookie .
System Description
The control module tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for a large leak. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor signal to determine the EVAP system vacuum level. When the conditions for running are met, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge valve OPEN and the EVAP vent valve CLOSED . This allows engine vacuum to enter the EVAP system. At a calibrated time, or vacuum level, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge valve closed, sealing the system, and monitors the FTP sensor input in order to determine the EVAP system vacuum level. If the system is unable to achieve the calibrated vacuum level, or the vacuum level decreases too rapidly, this DTC sets.

Conditions For Setting the DTC
The EVAP system is not able to achieve or maintain vacuum during the diagnostic test.
Diagnostic Aids
• To help locate intermittent leaks, use the J 41413-200 Evaporative Emissions System Tester (EEST) to introduce smoke into the EVAP system. Move all EVAP components while observing smoke with the J 41413-SPT High Intensity White Light.
• A temporary blockage in the EVAP purge solenoid, purge pipe or EVAP canister could cause an intermittent condition. Inspect and repair any restriction in the EVAP system.
• To improve the visibility of the smoke exiting the EVAP system, observe the suspected leak area from different angles with theJ 41413-SPT .
• Reviewing the Failure Records vehicle mileage since the diagnostic test last failed may help determine how often the condition that caused the DTC to be set occurs. This may assist in diagnosing the condition.
• For intermittent conditions refer to Intermittent Conditions .

Inspect the EVAP system for the following conditions:
• A loose, missing, or damaged service port schrader valve
• A loose, incorrect, missing, or damaged fuel fill cap
• A damaged EVAP purge solenoid
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Inspect the EVAP system for the following conditions:
• Any disconnected, improperly routed, kinked, or damaged EVAP pipes and hoses
• A damaged EVAP vent solenoid or EVAP canister
Did you find and correct the condition?

Smoke testing the evap system to find the leak would be your best bet .

The canister close valve stays open until commanded to close by the ECM. You must either smoke it whil energizing the solenoid with scanner or apply 12v to the 2 pins. Possible Causes:

EVAP System Vent Circuit Malfunction

This diagnosis detects leaks in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge line using of vapor pressure in the fuel tank. The EVAP canister vent control valve is closed to shut the EVAP purge line. The vacuum cut valve bypass valve will then be opened to clear the line between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. The EVAP control system pressure sensor can now monitor the pressure inside the fuel tank. If pressure increases, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will check for leaks in the line between the vacuum cut valve and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve.

Possible causes
- Incorrect fuel tank vacuum relief valve
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- Leak is in line between intake manifold and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve
- Foreign matter caught in EVAP canister vent control valve
- EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
- EVAP purge line (pipe and rubber tube) leaks
- EVAP purge line rubber tube bent
- Blocked or bent rubber tube to EVAP control system pressure sensor

A leak in the EVAP system can be a pain to resolve so be methodical. Start with the junction of the tube from the purge valve to the inlet manifold plenum. Disconnect this tube and block off the exposed port on the manifold. A great way for blocking off tubes and ports is to cut off the fingers of a rubber washing up glove and elastic bands to secure them over the exposed ends. First let us recap on the system. The EVAP system passively stores fuel vapour from the fuel tank in a charcoal filled canister. The canister can be located on the fender or bulkhead. When the engine is running above idle speed the ECU opens a purge valve connecting a pipe to the throttle body. A corresponding vent valve allows the ingress of air into the canister and this encourages fuel vapour to be drawn out of the canister through the purge valve to the throttle air intake mixture and thereafter to be burnt. The opening of the purge valve cycles with engine speed. The purge valve should be closed during idle. A faulty EVAP system manifest itself as erratic idling as it allows un-metered air into the system and compromises the inlet manifold vacuum. The blocking of the ports as initially suggested above should at least cause any erratic idling to be resolved. The EVAP system is not critical to engine performance, it is an emission control device, so the car may be run without issue until the fault is found. Look at the fuel cap, ensure that the rubber seal is intact. To make doubly sure give it a smear of grease. Next look at the disconnected 'purge valve to throttle' tube. Inspect it thoroughly for cracks, be quite rough and twist it around to get a good look. Now locate the purge valve. If it is electrically operated simply check for voltage continuity across its connector pins. An open circuit indicates a burnt out solenoid winding. Check the connection to the canister. Check the vent valve connections, and again check its electrical continuity. Check the tank to canister tubing and any connections. If you find no leaks you may need to take it to a garage that can do a smoke test on the system - this highlights the leaks as wisps of smoke appear where the leaks occur.

Hello shoretex...Yes sir you can repair this yourself...
p0442 is medium leak detected ...p0456 is small leak....and p0440 is a general evap system failure.. evap codes are a common thing. gas caps are an inexpensive place to start. There are two types of evap hoses on the Dodge... hard plastic and soft rubber.... before you replace parts check the soft rubber first at the evap cans and pump located about a foot in front of the gas tank fill pipe on trucks located next to the transfer case or right behind the trans on the driver side. hard plastic lines will brake or rub through...check spots where lines come in contact with anything. this is a common thing with older trucks...hair line cracks will kick a p0442 code, and a p0445 code...When you find a leak, repair it, and rescan...sometimes there are several leaks, continue with inspection and repairs until you get it all fixed up.... Remember..start at simple and work from there...
i will post the evap. system in more detail to help you troubleshoot the problem.
EVAP System: The Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control system used on all vehicles is the charcoal canister storage method. This method transfers fuel vapor from the fuel tank to an activated carbon (charcoal) storage device (canister) to hold the vapors when the vehicle is not operating. When the engine is operating, the fuel vapor is purged from the carbon element by intake air flow and consumed in the normal combustion process. The evaporative system includes the following components: *Fuel tank *Evaporative emission canister vent solenoid *Fuel tank pressure sensor *Fuel pipes and hoses *Vapor lines *Fuel cap *Evaporative emission canister *Purge lines *Purge valve solenoid EVAP System Operation: The EVAP purge solenoid valve allows manifold vacuum to purge the canister. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies a ground to energize the EVAP purge solenoid valve (purge on). The EVAP purge solenoid control is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) or turned on and off several times a second. The EVAP canister purge PWM duty cycle varies according to the operating conditions determined by the mass air flow, the fuel trim, the engine coolant temperature, and the intake air temperature. For certain EVAP tests, the diagnostic will be disabled if the TP angle increases to above 75% . The evaporative leak detection diagnostic strategy is based on applying vacuum to the EVAP system and monitoring for vacuum decay. The fuel level sensor input to the PCM is used to determine if the fuel level in the tank is correct to run the EVAP diagnostic tests. To ensure sufficient volume in the tank to begin the various diagnostic tests, the fuel level must be between 15% and 85% . The PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure/vacuum level via the fuel tank pressure sensor input. Results of Incorrect Operation: Poor idle, stalling and poor driveability can be caused by the following: *Malfunctioning purge solenoid. *Damaged canister. *Hoses/lines split, cracked and/or not connected properly. Evidence of fuel loss or fuel vapor odor can be caused by the following: *Liquid fuel leaking from the fuel lines *Cracked or damaged canister *Inoperative canister control valve Vacuum hoses that are: *Disconnected *Mis-routed *Kinked *Deteriorated *Damaged The evaporative leak detection diagnostic strategy is based on applying vacuum to the EVAP system and monitoring vacuum decay. The PCM monitors vacuum level via the fuel tank pressure sensor input. At an appropriate time, the EVAP purge solenoid and the EVAP vent solenoid are turned on, allowing engine vacuum to draw a small vacuum on the entire evaporative emission system. After the desired vacuum level has been achieved, the EVAP purge solenoid is turned off, sealing the system. A leak is detected by monitoring for a decrease in vacuum level over a given time period, all other variables remaining constant. A small leak in the system causes DTC P0442 to be set. If the desired vacuum level cannot be achieved in the test described above, a large leak or a faulty EVAP purge solenoid is indicated. This can be caused by the following conditions: *Disconnected or faulty fuel tank pressure sensor. *Missing or faulty fuel cap. *Disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked EVAP purge line. *Disconnected or damaged EVAP vent hose. *Disconnected, damaged, pinched, or blocked fuel tank vapor line. *Disconnected or faulty EVAP canister solenoid. *Disconnected or faulty EVAP vent solenoid. *Open ignition feed circuit to the EVAP vent or purge solenoid. *Damaged EVAP canister. Any of the above conditions sets DTC P0440. A restricted or blocked EVAP canister vent path is detected by drawing vacuum into the EVAP system. The PCM turns off the EVAP vent solenoid and the EVAP purge solenoid (EVAP vent solenoid Open, EVAP purge PWM 0% ). The PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor input. With the EVAP vent solenoid open, any vacuum in the system should decrease quickly unless the vent is blocked. A blockage is caused by the following conditions: *Faulty EVAP vent solenoid (stuck closed). *Plugged, kinked, or pinched vent hose. *Shorted EVAP vent solenoid driver circuit. *Plugged evaporative canister.
