A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened: A loose or improperly affixed gas cap A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand) A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube Other small leak in EVAP system Faulty vent o-ring seal Defective vent valve Defective purge valve Defective leak detection pump

2005 Hyundai Elantra P0442 code?

The code means the computer has tried to vent the gas tank and has found a small leak in the vent system.
You may need to research the code to get the testing procedure for your model and year.

Have a po442 code that i need to know how to fix.

Simple answer: ALL fault codes are serious enough to worry about and get them fixed.
In the BEST CASE scenario, whatever is causing the code may not be causing any immediate dammage to the vehicle, but it will also put you into the habit of completely IGNORING your check engine light. This will keep you from receiving any warning when a vehicle-damaging fault DOES occur. I have replaced many engines and/or transmissions just because of this.

Just thought I would also mention that in 1999, there are four different Yukon XL's. C1500, K1500, C2500 and K2500. Each of these also have several options available when it comes to engine size (4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L) and transmission type (4L60E and 4L65E). Some things may apply to one of these that do not apply to the others. It would be helpful if you were to mention which one you have when you ask for help or advice.

With all that said, Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0442 is defined by SAE J2012 as "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)"

The code pretty much means what the code decription says. There is a small leak in your evaporative emissions system. This can be a very tough code to properly diagnose for even some well-trained, experienced technicians. The problem with the "small leak" code is that it usually is not detectable by simple visual inspection (as opposed to code P0440, which indicates a large leak).

It will most likely require "smoke-testing" of your EVAP system in order to locate the source of the leak.

I have 2000 chevy impala 3.4 engine i have check engine light with this code p0442 took it it to auto zone they said it was a small leak dont know where to start

This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
  • A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
  • A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
  • Other small leak in EVAP system
  • Faulty vent o-ring seal
With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

Having the same problem the other guy described.

First of all, these codes are what are called "Powertrain Trouble Codes' (that's what the "P" means P=Powertrain). TCM Request (Transmission Control Module = TCM). The request was to turn on the 'Check Engine" light.
P0720 - output speed sensor circuit malfunction
P0715 - Input speed sensor (turbin speed) circuit malfunction
P0442 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Small Leak)
P0455 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Large Leak)
Check fuel filler cap problems - for Evap Emiss leaks
Replace the pulse generators & have the trans fluid replaced/flushed.
The Main Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 1 Is P0420, not P0442
If you had P0420 code, the catalytic converter is shot... and that's an expensive component.

The computer that read the code for you can also reset it.  If you don't have one, you can go to your local auto parts store and have them reset it for you.  This is what your code means P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak).  This is what Causes it and possible fixes: CausesA code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
