Question about 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

I lost my ignition key

I can't find the ignition key to my 1986 Monte Carlo SS. I was told by one dealer that they only hold codes for 20 years, so I can't get another one made that way. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, the dealer led me to believe my only option was to replace the ignition all together, but I thought a locksmith might be a better option. Looks like it's the best one.

A locksmith can come and pull your ignition switch and make a key for it, if you have AAA
I think they pick up part of the cost.

How do i get a detailed diagram of the steering column for a 1986 monte carlo ss with consoul shift?

I would go to a nearby GM dealer and explain to them you want to buy column parts and would like to see an exploded view diagram to "shop" from.
They should be more then happy to print one off for you. Good luck

Can i change the front end on my 86 monte carlo ls to a ss???

I can't see it being a problem. SS was basically just an option on a platform for all Monte Carlos.Everything from an SS should bolt on or in, depending on how far you go with it. Hope this helps.

Keys stuck in ignition tires not locked it is in

Is the battery dead or disconnected? I've had that problem in another Chevy. With battery disconnected it would not return to the off position and allow me to remove the key.

Good luck!
