2001 chevy tracker - shifter is locked in park - replaced the brake interlock switch and the shifter solenoid - but I am not getting power to the solenoid - what is the next step

You can remove the interlock off the gear shift or maybe spray some crc on it otherwise probably a loose wire or switch

When my blazer did this they had to replace part of the wiring harness in the steering wheel. It took forever for them to get the parts because we live in nowhereville, but once it was in it works again and no problems. I had to take it to the actual chevy dealer because none of the other places had a clue. good luck.

Hello Joe...The Aveo has had it shares of problems, and this is one of them....NHTSA issued several bulletins on the 04 Aveo...this following is the one pertaining to the shift interlock.....

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER MAY NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK (REPLACE BRAKE TRANSAXLE SHIFT INTERLOCK (BTSI) SOLENOID). *KB

Take that bulletin number to your dealer and see if they can help.

Untill you can get it repaired heres a little tip for getting it out of park....There is a a little hole in front of their gearshift lever that can correct the problem, temporarily. It should say "brake interlock release" or something like that. With car running, put a key-size object into it and push down while moving the lever. It does not damage the transmission, it just releases the lock. (make sure your foot is on the brake)

Now for the brake light issue...do you have power at the switch you replaced? If so go to the relay and check there...if no power there it's probably a bad ground.

Also...you may or may not know, but the timing belts on these Aveos are prone to failure at aprox 50k ...these failures have caused severe engine damage.

never did it in a 2002 chvy first off...go to napa...or what ever your local part store is and buy a manual...easy repair...the manuel gives pictures...you replace one end from under the hood...the other you may have to get under the car...if your skinny no prob..if not ...get some jacks...book will explain all..easyl..repair...

Shift Interlock System An ignition/shifter interlock mechanism is installed to prevent shifting the transaxle out of the PARK position unless the ignition switch is rotated to RUN and the brake pedal is applied. The floor shift interlock system consists of:
  • an actuator assembly integral to the ignition/shifter interlock cable assembly.
  • a bracket retaining the actuator.
  • the necessary wiring.
The solenoid is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, locking the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the ignition/shifter interlock actuator is deactivated and the transaxle range selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.

I cant get my shifter to move out of park, i just replaced my ignition lock cylinder could it be some type of theft prevention?


They might. The shift interlock solenoid is controlled by the brake light switch. When the brake pedal is depressed the switch sends a signal to the interlock solenoid attached to the shifter assembly to allow it to release. Check to see if the brake lights are operational. If not, suspect a problem with the brake light switch. If brake lights are working, possible wiring to shift interlock solenoid or solenoid itself causing the problem. Your vehicle may be equipped with an interlock release button located close to the shifter to allow it to come out of park that can be depressed to release the shifter. Owners manual may provide more information on this procedure

shifter interlocker . It's a safety device that won't allow the shifter to be taken out of park unless your foot is on the brake pedal . Your going to break it by forcing out of park . Brake switch could be bad or locking solenoid in gear shifter .

Shift Interlock System A brake/shifter interlock system consists of the following:
  • ignition switch (11572)
  • brake pedal stoplight switch (13480)
  • brake shift interlock module
  • brake shift interlock solenoid assembly (attached to key interlock assembly)
  • necessary wiring
On floor-shift vehicles, the ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719):

2001 ford taurus wont get out of park


Most of the time the problem is caused by the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
When you turn the key on, power is applied to the solenoid and stepping on the brake cuts that power.

Unable to take out of park position


Do the brake light work? No brake lights and it won't shift out of park. Check your fuses and check for loose wires. Check your brake light switch. If that has failed, you won't be able to get out of park. The other one if the shift lock solenoid which is in the shifter assembly. The brake shift interlock switch prevents the car being shifted from park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Try to apply power/ground to the proper wires & see if it will activate.. If it does, then the problem is between the brake light switch & that solenoid. Could be the wires or the switch.Make sure the shifter cable is still held down in place at the shifter assembly & under the hood. It is the interlock switch that you hear/feel clicking.It is for the prior generation but may still apply.

I have a 1999 Ford Escort and this morning could not get the silly thing to shift out of park. The release button on the shifter will not push in to move the shifter into drive or any other gear


These cars have a shift interlock switch that prevents the car from being shifted out of park if you don't depress the brake. If your brake lights work, then the switch it good. It isn't uncommon that the interlock solenoid fails. The solenoid moves the lock release when you depress the brake. If you look on the side of the console you can see a notch cut out. You can put a screwdriver in there to push the interlock and shift it from park. Of course, you don't want to do this all the time so you either need to replace the interlock solenoid (last I checked they were about $150) or just defeat the solenoid with a zip tie. The only problem with the zip tie is that you don't have to depress the brake to shift it from park and it can be shifted from park even if the key is not in it. Your owners manual will have better detail and pictures of the interlock and where to put the screwdriver to manually shift it from park.

I have a 2001 chevy s-10 that will not shift out of park . I can move the shifter freely,but it will not shift. this is a column shifter.


There is a safety feature on these trucks that makes you depress the brake pedal so you can put the truck in gear, but if you look under the shifter if it is in the floor (console) you will see a solenoid under the shifter. You can over-ride the solenoid by pressing in on the white or cream color clip on the right side of the shifter.this will pull the set pin out towards the passenger side and allow you to put the truck into gear. This is called a shifter lock solenoid. You have to replace the whole shifter assembly if its not shifting out of park. It had to do with the safety feature of the brakes being applied before the car will shift into park. check out the brake switch wire.if its having a cut in between or a loose connection in between this problem can occur. There is a solenoid that locks the shifter in park until you press the brake.Try checking that solenoid and its associated circuitry. also check the brake light switch,you might have a bad brake light switch. the brake light switch releases the shifter lock mechanism.
It's called the shift interlock feature. It's triggered by the brake switch so make sure the brake lights are coming on when this happens. If you have no brake lights, then you will have to test for power in and out of the brake light switch If the brake lights are working, then you'll have to get to the solenoid in the console or column. Disassemble as much as you have to to access the solenoid near the shifting mechanism. Us a 12v test light to test for power arriving at the solenoid when the brake is applied. If power is arriving and the solenoid is not triggering, the solenoid is bad.

Transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort


Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock.Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal,the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter.The solenoid unlocks the shifter,and you remove it from Park.When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning,however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.
