If you had a tranny seal problem, you would have an external leak. If you have a pump problem you will not any forward or reverse. If the pump is still a problem you will have to remove the transmission to replace the pump. I suggest you talk to a transmission shop and get an estimate for repairs.

Is it good to buy a 1998 ram 1500 5.9 with the 4x4 not conected and would it cost alot to fix ?

Personally, If the seller would not allow vehicle to go to shop and get estimate for repairs before I purchased it, or have something already in writing from a legitimate shop stating what it needs and they will guarantee the repair and price, then I'd pass on it. Obviously it isn't a cheap repair or they would have had it done for better chance of selling it.

It is most likely a closed or mostly closed thermostat, cheap fix and very common.

What kind of tranny will work to replace mine?

Yes. They should both be 46RE transmissions and the bolt patterns and the plugs should be the same.

You need to get your tranny rebuilt. The motor that is already in your truck is set up for that Tranny so i wouldnt change it at all as it would cost alot more then you need to spend to do it. . I also would go to Mr.Transmission as they do great work on trannys.
