The solenoids are located on the valve body inside the transmission.

Your transmission should still work if the solenoid goes bad. It will just shift funny

SOURCE: Trouble code P1740 on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

I had the same code on my 2001 dodge 2500. The truck wouldn't shift from 3-4. I pulled the trans pan off and replaced a broken spring ($2.00). It is behind a thin plate with 3-4 small torq screws. You don't have to remove the valvebody. Only took me 45 minutes to fix.

I would like to give thanks to Jeff Russel from Teal automotive. He said this is a very common problem. He sells any part for any automatic Transmision and his prices are very affordable.

Hope this helps.

P0743 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical
Symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) Possible causes - Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
Tech notes This is an electrical problem code. Could be a problem to the harness to the TCC solenoid, the TCC solenoid connector or the TCC solenoid it self.

1999 dodge ram take of WOT fine threw all gears and can feel the lock up ingage fine. at 55 mph crusing and heavy accel it goes like its in neutral.

The situation you describe could be (i) low fluid in the torque converter, (ii) a faulty signal to or from the torque clutch solenoids, (iii) a crack in the torque lock up solenoid pipe leading to fluid pressure loss, or (iv) the torque clutch solenoid modulator is faulty. 1) Is there plenty of fluid on dip stick? 2) have the (transmission diagnostic) codes read at Autozone 3) Check that the transmission electrical connector plug socket pins are clean and free of corrosion 4) Check solenoids - Drain fluid, remove transmission pan and remove filter. Now looking at the back edge of the valve control assembly from left to right (as viewed in direction of travel) is the force motor/pressure control solenoid, two identical square shaped solenoids corresponding to '2 to 3 shift' and '1 to 2 shift' and, last on the right, the forward clutch accumulator. On the front edge of the valve assembly, again from left to right, we have torque converter clutch solenoid (A) and immediately above it, pointing straight up, the torque converter lock up solenoid (B) and finally on the left the 'down shift 3 to 2' solenoid. Unplug the torque converter clutch solenoid (A) and using a small screw driver remove the solenoid's retaining clip from the close by slot. Remove the solenoid. Also disconnect and then remove the two securing bolts holding the torque converter lock up solenoid (B) assembly and drop that out. Thoroughly clean both solenoids. Check up the end of the pipe of (B) with the aid of torch and look for any signs of cracks. Check both solenoids across the connector pins for electrical resistance: (B) should have 20 to 25 ohms and (A) should be 10 to 15 ohms. If there is either no or infinite resistance then this indicates either a short or open circuit respectively and the solenoid should be replaced. Note that (B) is an 'on/off' type solenoid and can be opened and closed by applying a 12volt source across the pins; (A) is a 'pulse width modulated' solenoid and so cannot be easily tested for full operation in isolation.

My 2007 dodge with 5.9 diesel is showing engine malfunction light and error code of P1740, failed TCC or overdrive solenoid. The truck seems to run ok in overdrive but I don't understand what the TCC...

Code P1740-Torque converter clutch did not lock up when the PCM sent the command. Enabling conditions: No engine or transmissions codes are present, vehicle speed was under 70 MPH, TPS was under 33% open. When the PCM commanded the torque converter to lock, no change was detected in engine speed. Blocking action: This code can block the following monitors: none.

Testing: Check torque converter solenoid for proper operation.

NUMBER: 21-11-00
GROUP: Transmissions
EFFECTIVE DATE: October 02, 2000
SUBJECT: 46RE Transmission MIL Due To DTC P1740 - TCC or OD Solenoid Performance
OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves the replacement of the transmission pressure boost valve cover plate.
MODELS: 2000 - 2001 (AB) Ram Van 2000 - 2001 (AN) Dakota 2000 - 2001 (BR/BE) Ram Truck 2000 - 2001 (DN) Durango

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 46RE TRANSMISSION BUILT BEFORE AUGUST 01, 2000 (MDH O8O1XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may complain of a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. Upon further analysis, it is determined that the MIL is caused by Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1740 - Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) or overdrive solenoid Performance. Other than the MIL, the customer may not notice any other condition with the transmission.

This condition may be caused by an intermittent and momentary TCC disengagement condition. The transmission valve body pressure boost valve cover plate has been revised with a larger size orifice hole to address this condition.

NOTE: THE DRB III(R) MUST BE OPERATING AT RELEASE LEVEL 50.4 MDS2 SYSTEM CIS CD2067 OR HIGHER (AVAILABLE THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 2, 2000) IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE REVISED TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH STALL TEST. DO NOT USE EARLIER VERSION STALL TEST TO DETERMINE CONDITION OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH.

Here can find the test in pdf format: 2009-11-28_034958_1124.pdf

Hope helps.

Error codes

Her is the definition and a list of possiable causes.

P1740 TCC O/D SOL PERFORMANCE (GAS)
Theory of Operation
The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid is used to engage the TCC which improves fuel economy.
When Monitored
The Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) and Overdrive Clutch (OD) will be tested each time the PCM requests TCC engagement in 3rd gear and OD.
Set Condition
The DTC will set if the expected RPM drop is not achieved while attempting to engage TCC or OD. This indicates a malfunctioning torque convertor or overdrive clutch.
Possible Causes
* ENGINE DTCS PRESENT
* TRANSMISSION DTCS PRESENT
* TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE TOO COLD
* OIL PAN CONTAINS EXCESSIVE DEBRIS
* 3-4 SHIFT SOLENOID
* SHAFT OR SEAL DAMAGE
* TCC SOLENOID
* TORQUE CONVERTER
