Question about 1989 GMC S-15 Jimmy

Digital instrument panel not working 1989 S-15 Jimmi

Just bought this truck and the instument panel witch is digital is not working, it also does not light up. The only thing that lights up is the check engine light, the seat belt light, and the yellow and red light at the end of the tack bar. None of the digital works, fuel gage, tack odometer,speedometer,temp.amps. all digital and not working. I pulled the instument panel out to inspect it. Pulled the cover off the back and the electronic panel witch is blue has an area on it that has a bit of a dark color on it, wondering if that is normal or if it is a burn mark or something. Is there any way of testing this panel now that I have it out.

WHY is MY INSTUMENT panel not working?

Try slapping your hand on the dash above the instrument cluster a couple of times to see if it comes back. If not, there may be a fuse that you have overlooked

Instrument panel not working

normally if it does not work you will check the fuse box for the appropriate fuse and check to make sure it is good. if the fuse is good then remove the insrument panel andc check for power at the plug. if there is power at the plug then the instument power board is faulty and must be replaced.

I believe the warranty for the enitire instrument panel was extended (maye due to a recall), but it was based on mileage. under 50,000 miles it was free parts/labor replacement, up to 70,000 free part, pay for labor, above 70,000, no longer warrantied..dont qoute me on the mileage limitations, but it was something like that..replace mine at 69,000 miles. got lucky.

When I turn my lights on, the two turn signals stay on and none of the dash lights come on. The turn signals flash when you flip the lever left to right so i know the problem is not in the blinkers or...

sounds like an open to the lights in the instrument panel, if the lights work in the radio, ac panel, etc.

Or, all the bulbs burnt out at once (unlikely).

Maybe the harness to the instrument panel is loose, but only is accessible after removing the dash board.

Instument Guages

well the issue is youe enitre gauge cluster i do understand that your speedometer is working but it is a cable speedometer not electronic like everything else in the gauge cluster so first i would recomend checking the voltage getting to your gauge cluster then just replace the guagecluster they are really cheap i a salvage and not hard to install at all but the cluster itself is not very comon to go out so make sure you check voltage to it first i wouldnt want you to go through buying and replaceing the cluster and that not fix it

Instrument panel is not working

Found the problem! The main cable going to the under-hood fuse box was rubbing against the metal bracket that the fuse box mounts on. Can we say poor electrical layout?? It had rubbed the sheathing off the cable and had broken one wire (the one supplying power to the instrument panel.) So I fixed that and cut a section of rubber hose and put it over the bracket to help prevent such events from occurring in the future.
