Question about 2001 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

I replaced the alternator. It ran perfect for about 4 days. Then one morning while driving to work the battery light came on. I got the car to a friends house. I later was able to start the car and barely get it home. I stopped at a Auto mechanic & he tested it saying the " Alternator wasn't charging". He put a battery pack on the car so I could get it home ( I live 200 yards from shop). When I got home the Hot wire that runs from the battery to the alternator was melting. My car now has a charged battery, But that wire get's very hot at the bolt if you put a drain on the car ( running heater fan, lights, etc). Would you say the alternator is bad or could that wire be bad?

SOURCE: Charging system

change your battery cables and check all wires on the alternator for loose connections, expecially the grounds.

Replacing the fuse the first time was the right move, becuase it could have been a fluke that it blew. Replacing it again and again was not! You should have found out EVERYTHING that the #2 fuse controlled and verified that the components weren't pulling excessive amperage (shorted condition). By replacing the fuse over and over, you might have made the problem worse by subjecting good components to something that was shorted.

BTW next time pick the oldest guy at autozone to help you, if the counter help knew their stuff they would have told you the same thing I just did!

check the voltage on the battery with a volt meter, it should be around 12.6 to 13 volts, if not charge battery with a charger, after charge try to start vehicle, if the vehicle starts use your volt meter at the battery again, the voltage should be around 14 to 14.5 any lower and the battery isn't being charged and the alternator should be checked and or replaced to solve the problem..

SOUNDS LIKE THE BATTERY IS SHOT AND NEEDS REPLACING. MOST BATTERIES AVERAGE BETWEEN 2-4 YRS. I'VE SEEN SOME BATTERIES ONLY LASTING A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR. DEPENDING ON HOW YOU USE THE VEHICLE, MATTERS HOW LONG A BATTERY CAN LAST. IF YOU SIT & IDLE THE VEHICLE WITH THE A/C ON,FAN AT HIGH SPEED, LIGHTS ON, STEREO RUNNING WILL SHORTEN LIFE CAUSE THERES NOT ENOUGH ALTERNATOR SPEED TO CHARGE THE BATTERY. REMEMBER, WHAT VOLTAGE IS CONSUMED BY THE VEHICLE, THE ALTERNATOR REPLACES THE VOLTAGE BACK INTO IT AND MAINTAIN. PROVIDING YOU DON'T HAVE A RED BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH WHILE DRIVING, IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT THE ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING. BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE THE CHARGING SYSTEM CHECKED ON YOUR CAR TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION. GOOD LUCK.

Sounds like it's not charging. Get a volt meter on it, or have a garage check it out. The only other issue you may have is a draw from somewhere. (like a glove box door light staying on)

2000 jetta has multiple alternator and battery failures

In my case, the instrument cluster was bad, causing the MFI display and radio to go haywire and putting a contstant drain on the battery. $760 to have the VW shop replace it. No problems related to the battery or alternator have occurred since.

Good luck.

Your alternators should have a warranty on them...but if your car is breaking alternators, you may have the wrong size belt...maybe to small and putting to much strain on your alternator.
