Question about 2006 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

My 2006 Ford Explorer revvs while driving and loses momentum. I have to pull over, place in park and sometimes even turn the engine off to get it to work. Sometimes I have to turn it off more than once. In the last four months a transmission shop has put three rebuilt transmissions in my vehicle and are finally giving up......at a loss at knowing the problem. Could it be something, other than a transmission problem and if so, what?

SOURCE: something slipping in transmission ford contour 1999

it depends on the trans but ford had alot of problems with though years with the overdrive shift kit it is a band in the trans and it pop out and break you need to take to local trans shop and let them look at it and tell them the problem and they will take the trans out and crack it up and replace the part that need to be replace before you have to replace the whole trans the ford dealerships dont have the best trans people hate to say that but it true take to someone who specialize in trans only

If the mounts are okay and you are getting a hard slam it could be the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temp sensor in the trans pan) or the Pressure control solenoid in the valve/control body.

I somewhat agree with other solutions on this page. I agree that what you are describing is a severe misfire, however there are MANY possible causes for a severe misfire other than just the spark plugs...I recommend diagnosing the CAUSE of the misfire before spending any money "GUESSING" and replacing a bunch of parts.

Also, a code P0300 is a "RANDOM MISFIRE" code which indicates that there is definately more than one cylinder misfiring. Your computer MAY display this code, however, a SINGLE cylinder misfire can also cause a loss of power and the check engine light to flash.
You may just have something like a bad coil on one cylinder that needs to be replaced. This is why PROPER diagnosis is recommended.

Vacuum leaks

If you are losing Brake Fluid, do not drive this with the engine revving. Not sure what you have the leak from; but a bad Brake booster can cause only a Vacuum leak, not a fluid leak.

If the engine is revving, do not drive. Start the engine, then take a spray bottle of water and mist the intake gaskets, vacuum lines and Brake booster. A leak will pull in water and change your RPM or stall the motor. When you find out where the leak is, you can fix it.

Some of the other symptoms should clear once the Vacuum leaks are found with the exception of the Brake fluid issue.

This type of problem needs a special test done by the dealer on the idle speed control system, it is called an "engine running EEC V" active test.

I have a 2006 ford explorer 7psgr. Driving it tonight it was fine a few minutes later it started chugging and wrench and engine light came on, parked it and turned it off, waited started it again and...

Hi, it could be anything from one of the primary sensors to a slipped timing belt. Can you get it to a parts chain to have it scanned? The trouble code will help us diagnose the problem.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5932051-check_engine_light_check. These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Lose in momentum or power when motorway driving. Seems to happen between 70-85. No Engine lights or even a hange in the rev counter... Even my girlfriend noticed it when she drove it.

don't ignore simple maintenance issues which can cause minor problems like this. namely a filthy air filter, or restricted fuel filter.
