  1. crankshaft position sensor could be at fault. CPS is responsible for spark timing and fuel pressure at the pressure regulator. A code should be stored on the vehicles PCM. The check engine light should be on. Codes must be read by a generic code reader.

Why would the fuse to fuel pump burn when i try to start my 98 ford ranger

Short to ground, or short to the positive side of the starter solenoid between solenoid and Starter positive lead. "electricity follows the path of least resistance". See if you an run a tempory positive from battery to the fuel pump (after disconecting fuel pump and it will run. Or if you have an ohm meter check the resistance between ground and it's positive terminal disconnected from it's power lead. If it shows no resistance there is an internal short to grown and thus blowing fuse. If shows some resistance, it should be good. Measure resistance of the positive lead to the fuel pump still disconnected and ground. If zero, that lead is pinched and grounded to the frame thus blowing fuse. This lead connects to what is known as fuel pump relay. That may be the problem too. Good luck.

I have a 1988 ranger no spark no fuel pressure iv replace the coil what could the issue be

Is it Fuel injection and electronic ignition, or still distributor and carb?
if its FI, check the fuel relay, located in the fuse box usually, not sure where for your truck specifically, but if you locate it, tap on it a few times while someone else cranks the truck, also, the fuel pump could be faulty, can you hear the winding noise when you turn on the ignition, if not, then pump is gone.
The spark issue is a tricky one since you said you have replaced the coil... spark wires ok? coil installed properly? battery charged and leads tight? alternator working? if alternator is failing to charge the battery, then it gets to a point where you dont have enough power to make the coil spark, the engine will crank, but not enough current (amps) to fully charge coils to deliver healthy spark.

Good luck...

How to locate and check fuel pump on 03 ford ranger edge Fx4 4.0

Locating the fuel pump is easy, it's in the fuel tank. Testing it however, is a different story. To test it "by the book" requires a scanner that can access and run "Output Test Mode" diagnostics on your engine computer, a fuel pressure gauge, and a digital volt-ohm meter.

If your engine will not start and run, you can do this to see if maybe it is the fuel pump:
First pull one of the spark plug wires to see if you have spark while someone cranks the engine for you. If there is spark, continue with these instructions. If there is no spark, close this thread out and start a new one for "2003 Ford ranger has no spark" Be sure and say also which engine your Ranger is equipped with.

Find the fuel pump relay in the under-hood fuse and relay center. The lid on the fuse box only has numbers. Your owners manual will tell you which number is the fuel pump relay. Feel the relay with your fingers while someone turns the ignition switch to the "run" position. You should feel the relay "click" then about 2 seconds later, you should feel it click again. If this is doing this, then chances are that your fuel pump is bad. (we are assuming here that you had spark above.) This is not a complete or "foolproof" test by any means, but it is probably 85% accurate for "Cranks, Won't Start" problems.
