CAUTION
In every case, road test the vehicle after any brake work to make sure the brake system is working safely and properly. When servicing wheel brake parts, do not create dust by cleaning with a dry brush or compressed air.

  • Reassemble the brakes in the reverse order of disassembly.
  • Try the fit of the brake drum over the new shoes.
  • If not slightly snug, pull it off and turn the star wheel until a slight drag is felt when sliding on the drum.
fr_45.29.3184.gif Using the other side of the brake gauge to set the brake shoes.
  • A brake preset gauge makes this job easy and final brake adjustment simple.
  • Then install the brake drum, wheel bearings, spindle nuts, cotter pins, dust caps, and wheel/tire assemblies, and make the final brake adjustments as specified in individual instructions in the vehicle's service manual.
  • Torque the spindle and lug nuts to specifications.
NOTE THIS IS FOR A 2WD 2.0L

2008 ford escape. removal of rear bumper cover

Pop the Hatchback open and remove the connectors
from the top of the bumper cover.

Optional Step: Using a Floor Jack, raise both sides
of the car in the back, supporting both sides with
jack stands, and remove the rear wheels.

Using Torx Bits, remove the inner rear wheel well
lining.

Get behind the rear wheel well and loosen the bolts
holding the bumper brackets on. They're pretty
difficult to find and remove. Be Patient. Do the
same to the other side.

Remove the rear bumper cover by pulling the cover
outward from the part nearest the wheel on both
sides. Once removed, take off the 2 black mounting
brackets from the bumper cover.

Good Luck

Rear axel removal on a 2006 Ford Escape

If the axles are C-clipped in place, you will have to remove the differential cover to access the clips, which are on the inside of the spider gears.
However, I am just taking a guess, because I cannot see the vehicle you are working on, nor am I familiar with a Ford Escape.
