Tranmission diagnoise end servise guide

Transmission service requires a LOT of special tools and equipment to perform. You can purchase several new transmissions for what it would cost you to buy the equipment to fix yours with. I would recommend taking your vehicle to a transmission repair shop, where they already have the service information and all the equipment required to do the job.

How do you remove heater coil unit ?

This will be a big job. The heater core is tucked up under the dashboard. In some cases you can get the heater core out without removing the dashboard, in other cases some or most of the dashboard will need to come out.

If you are entertaining tackling this job yourself, you will definitely need a service manual. The ones from automotive stores, Haynes, Chilton, etc, will provide generic instructions. For specific detailed instructions, order a Workshop manual for your vehicle. It will provide detailed instructions on how to remove, test, repair, replace the heater core.

In general, the Haynes and similar manuals provide basic information for those who have skill in repairing vehicles with little assistance. The Workshop manuals also require skill but are dedicated to just one model and year and provide much more detailed instructions.

Best of luck, Jim

Burning oil internally and puffing white smoke out the exhaust!

Both are classic signs of a failed head gasket. The white smoke is water vapour. To confirm the diagnosis get the vehicle to a repair garage where they can run a quick and foolproof "sniff test": this means that they take a small sample of coolant, add it to a vial of chemical solution and shake it. A colour change will confirm a failed head gasket.

There is no cheap or easy fix for this, but if you get the repairs done without delay you avoid the problem getting even more expensive. Although the head gasket is fairly cheap, it's the labour and all the other bits 'n pieces which are the major part of the cost.

Note that due to the amount of stripping down involved, the job usually results in other components being replaced as a matter of routine such as timing belts (or timing chain tensioners) and the water pump. Both are relatively cheap and it's a fool's saving to not change them as a precautionary measure whilst doing the main job. Depending upon how far the damage has progressed yo may also expect to have any of the following done:- cylinder head skimming (to make it perfectly flat again), crack repairs to the cylinder head, new or reprofiled valves, valve guides and seats, or in a worst case a whole replacement cylinder head. This list is not exhaustive. Unsurprisingly, it's one of those jobs which often consigns vehicles to the scrap heap as old cars also have worn transmissions, braking systems, suspension, electrics and various other expensive faults and so it can prove to be better to replace the entire vehicle.

This is a major job which involves heavy lifting and competent mechanical skills; it's not suited to DIY repair unless you're very experienced, confident and are prepared to buy any additional tools as you go along. A step by step guide is also beyond the scope of this website: the job takes up half a chapter along with numerous cross references to other chapters in any workshop repair manual, so if you're considering the DIY route you'll need to buy or borrow a workshop manual. The golden rule is this: do not expect the manual to be absolutely correct or crystal clear on everything, and do not expect the job to go absolutely smoothly as there's always something else which you need to deal with. If you do the work successfully you'll have an enormous feeling of satisfaction afterwards and will gain invaluable experience and confidence.

Sorry that there is no quick or easy fix for this, but I hope that you have still found my reply to be of some use in deciding what to do about your problem. Please take a moment to rate my answer.

I have a 55 plate X Type jaguar Sovereign and the oil presure light started to flicker today, is a oil pump change a big job?

its a major job on this vehicle, in the workshop manual it says 17hours remove and install, so you could say this is a major job, but it might not be that have you had your oil presure switch checked first, it will be a lot less money to get that checked first....hope this helped
