On my 1998 xj8 when I put it in reverse the car barely move shift through the gears an go back to reverse it goes into gear

You may be low on transmission fluid, the filter may need to be changed, or a solenoid may be going out. Do you have any error codes or performance issues other than the lack of movement in reverse?

Why Lack of reverse power?

Which engine/transmission? Could be a gearshift cable rigging problem, or eventually a problem in the valve body.

Car whines when in reverse

You didn't say if it was an automatic or a manual transmission. If it is a manual, whine in reverse is normal because the reverse gear is straight cut. The forward gears are helical cut so they don't whine.

does it make a whining sound? if so the filter may be clogged, replace the filter and note what debris is in the bottom of the pan. you may get it to live a little while longer if indeed the filter is stopped up, but it will need trans work.

Truck won't move in drive, when it does it drives slow and has a whining sound. Whines in reverse when you back up. Feels sluggish and doesn't have much acceleration. Also the RPMs fluctuate in cruise...

Try changing the automatic transmission fluid and the transmission filter. There are also bands on the transmission that can be adjusted. You will need to buy the service manual at your local auto parts store to get the exact specifications for adjusting the bands.

Whining from engine when in gear

Just a thought- remove the oil filler cap when the whine is present - (this checks if PCV valve is faulty, causing high crankcase vacuum, which in turn causes a whistling/whine noise as air leaks past engine oil seals). Worth a check.

Try listening with a short piece of hose pipe to locate immediate area/source of noise.
