An is displayed in the shiter display on the dash?

Diagnostic said i needed an egr pressure sensor valve but nothing about the < E > so aft the job was done drove about 2 blks and the < E > came back . the manual says to contact the dealer i did and was told he had never heard of such a thing,but i could bring it in for 79.95 to find out what the problem was

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Electronic Transmission Error Indicator
The vehicle is equipped with a redundant electronic gearshift indicator. This character appears with the key in the RUN position and displays the same gear selection as shown on the selector lever floor console next to the range selector lever. If an "E" character flashes or remains on this indicates that a transmission malfunction has occurred.

Dealer can conduct scan test and retrieve fault code. I pulled above from dealer shop manual.

1991 is pre-OBD2. code readers will not work.

however, all is not lost. Many cars have an alternate way of reading codes from the computer.
Toyota has a block under the hood and you short couple wires together and count engine light flashes
Chrysler you can turn the ignition key on and off a few times and count engine light flashes
in your case for GMs from 1982 to 1995
1: find the 12 pin connector under the dash and short the upper two rightmost terminals.
with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. In this mode, the computer will display a Code 12, three consecutive times, by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" or light. A Code 12 consists of one flash, a short pause, then two flashes in rapid succession.
2:. After Code 12 is displayed, any stored trouble codes will be displayed by flashing the "CHECK ENGINE", "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP" light. All codes are displayed 3 times each then a code 12 will repeat. In the diagnostic mode, the computer will also energize all computer controlled relays and solenoids.

1. Use a diagnostic scan tool to record any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). 2. Remove the throttle body resonator. 3. Perform the fuel system pressure release procedure (Refer to 14 - Fuel System/Fuel Delivery - Standard Procedure) 4. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

Just had my gaskets, and EGR Valve replaced and the code P401 keeps popping up and check engine light will not go out.


I believe this code refers to a fault in EGR flow. In most GM vehicles the EGR flow is measured by the MAP sensor. Have your map sensor checked with a diagnostic scanner that displays real time data. It should read 1-2 volts at idle and should gradually increase with acceleration.

DTC 12 -
When terminals "A" and "B" have been connected, the ignition switch turned to the "ON" position with the engine not operating, the MIL (Service Engine Soon) should flash DTC 12 three times consequently. This will be the following flash sequence: "flash, pause, flash-flash, pause, flash, pause, flash-flash, pause, flash, pause, flash-flash." DTC 12 indicates that the control module diagnostic system is operating properly. If DTC 12 is not indicated, and a fault is present within the diagnostic system itself, it should be addresses by consulting the appropriate diagnostic chart in this section.

The MIL (SES) will indicate a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) three times if a DTC is present, or it will simply continue to output DTC 12. If more than one DTC has been stored in the control module memory, the DTC(s) will be displayed from the lowest to the highest with each DTC being displayed three times.



DTC 32 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Error
EGR open command did not change the fuel mixture when the command was given during off idle operation. EGR opening should cause the mixture to be slightly richer because of the low oxygen content of the exhaust gas. EGR position signal is also monitored to verify EGR movement.

The EGR relies on a certain amount of exhaust back pressure to work properly. Now that you have lowered the back pressure, it can't work. Have you tried a new EGR valve? You may need a service manual with an EGR diagnostic chart to make sure, but I think the duals are the problem. Plus the O2 sensor is only looking at one side of engine instead of both.

Keep in midn this procedure to Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes:
To clear the DTC's from memory of the control module, either to determine if the malfunction will occur again or because the repair has been completed, the Tech 1 Scan Tool should be used to clear the DTC's. If a Tech 1 Scan Tool is not available the following must be perform'd when all repairs have been completed. This will allow all DTC's to be cleared:
1. Ignition "OFF."
2. Ground diagnostic terminal "A" to "B" of DLC (Data Link Connector).
3. Ignition "ON."
4. Fully apply brake pedal.
5.Fully apply accelerator pedal.
6. Check MIL (Service Engine Soon) for DTC 12.
7. Release brake pedal.
8. Release accelerator pedal.
9. Check MIL (Service Engine Soon) for DTC 12.
10. Turn ignition "OFF."
11. Remove Jumper from DLC connector.

NOTICE: To prevent control module damage, the key must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting module power.

Problem Description: Code 32 means that the EGR diagnostic switch was not detected closed under the following conditions:


  • Coolant temperature greater than 80 C (176 F).
  • EGR duty cycle commanded by the ECM is greater than 50%.
  • Manifold pressure less than 25 kPa, (7" vacuum).
  • All conditions above must be met for about 8 seconds.


Diagnostic Aids: A Scantool can be used to check the diagnostic switch circuit. The Scantool should display "on" when vacuum is applied to the diagnostic switch. The switch should also be indicated as being closed whenever the ECM is commanding an EGR duty cycle of greater than 50%. EGR duty cycle can also be monitored by a Scantool.



"Scan" Diagnostics: Before using this test, check for ported vacuum to EGR solenoid, also check hoses for leaks or restrictions. There should be at least 7"hg vacuum at 2000 rpm.
Disconnect EGR solenoid vacuum harness. Rotate harness and reinstall only the EGR valve side. Ignition on, engine stopped. Install a hand held vacuum pump with gauge to mainfold side of EGR solenoid. Apply vacuum and observe EGR valve, the valve should not move.

Unfortunately, both of these items are equally important and repairs can't normally be avoided by taking care of your car.

Your MAP (Mass Air Pressure) Sensor measures intake manifold vacuum pressure to help control the air and fuel mixture and timing. It contains a pressure-sensitive element that connects to an electronic circuit, generating a signal that changes with pressure changes in the manifold.

Your EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve recirculates exhaust gases through the intake manifold to be burned again, cooling peak combustion temperature. Dilutes the air and fuel mixture to keep the nitrogen oxide emissions within breathable limits. And yes, it could very well be that the EGR solenoid that is causing the issue.

Both units effect your vehicle's fuel/air mixture. This is important because your vehicle running lean/rich can cause "snowball" problems. For example, a faulty EGR can cause the vehicle to run rich/lean. If not repaired, in time, the exhaust caused by the wrong rich/lean fuel mixture can damage the O2 sensors and/or catalytic converter.

If I had to pick, I'd start with your MAP Sensor. One guess I would have is that your MAP Sensor failed and made your vehicle start burning the wrong fuel/air mixture. Assuming I'm right, this could have damaged the EGR Valve. So, I see no reason to replace the EGR Valve alone, just so it too can be damaged by the poor fuel/air mixture caused by the still-faulty MAP Sensor. If your lucky, you may see the faulty EGR code disappear once your MAP Sensor is replaced.
