Question about 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Truck

Open Question

Engine light goes on and I check the code and it tells me P0868.

The code tells me that the pressure sensor volts are to high and its the 2nd time this has happened. I'm I going to have to replace this sensor and is it easy to replace? I don't even know where it's at. Thanks guys... Chad

I would disconnect the battery for about 3 mins. Then drive it around tell the light comes on and then check the codes again by cycling the key 3 times. Have you put new plugs in? I have replaced my plugs 4 times tell I relized Dodge durango 4.7 and Magnums do not like platnium plugs. They will miss almost from the first time putting them in. Then I would go to Cylinder 3 and look at the plug. For the most part its either plugs on the left bank or Coils. all you have to do is pull the coil put the plug from that cylinder in the coil and ground the electrode out. If it sparks the coil is working if not then change the plug if it still dosnt you have a bad coil. The power steering switch is somthing way diffrent. The o2 sensor smells the gas and tells the computer wether its needs to back off on fuel or put in more. Sorry I had company show up & couldn't get back until this am.
On yours, you leave connector on at TPS, and with key on, not running, use voltmeter at center terminal. At idle it should read more than 200MV. At wide open throttle (WOT) should be less than 4.8 volts. Also should increase gradually as you open throttle, any drop off, or large fluctuation indicates problem, as long as your smooth doing it. If not within these voltages, or jumps up & down, drops off, replace it. You still should be able to do same with ohmmeter & harness disconnected, and connected at 2 of the pins at sensor. (it's a potentiometer) Increase & decrease same rules & smooth. If doesn't work at one set of pins try different combinations, or ground & one pin.One way or another you should find the right combination to get a reading in ohms.

One of 3 things can cause this behavior of the oil pressure light going on and off: (1) oil level might be a little low... double check and make sure your oil is porperly topped off; (2) sensor is defective... which might require replacement; (3) oil pump problem... this can be an obstruction of some kind of the oil pump. If there is a strainer, which is typical, there might be sludge or something else obstructing the entry to the oil pump, thus, resulting in lower pressure output. It is rare, not impossible, for the oil pump itself to be defective... but again, very rare. If the issue is at the oil pump, it willmost commonly be an obstruction. Try having the engine flushed professionally. There are auto service centers with this capability. It is probably the most affordable first step to take. If after a flush the problem persists, then have the sensor checked.

1991 is pre-OBD2. code readers will not work.

however, all is not lost. Many cars have an alternate way of reading codes from the computer.
Toyota has a block under the hood and you short couple wires together and count engine light flashes
Chrysler you can turn the ignition key on and off a few times and count engine light flashes
in your case for GMs from 1982 to 1995
1: find the 12 pin connector under the dash and short the upper two rightmost terminals.
with the ignition "ON" and engine not running. The system will enter the diagnostic mode. DTC P0521: Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensor Performance

The engine oil pressure (EOP) sensor changes voltage based on the engine oil pressure. The EOP sensor is a 3-wire sensor comprising of the signal circuit, the low reference circuit and the 5-volt reference circuit. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EOP sensor via the 5-volt reference circuit and provides ground via the EOP low reference circuit. The ECM monitors the signal circuit of the EOP sensor to determine the EOP sensor voltage is within the normal operating range of approximately 1-4 volts. When the engine oil pressure is high, the EOP sensor voltage is high and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. When the engine oil pressure is low, the EOP sensor voltage is low and the ECM senses a low signal voltage. The ECM sends the EOP information to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) via GMLAN serial data message.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
P0521
The ECM detects that the difference between the predicted oil pressure and the actual oil pressure is either less than 47 kPa (6.8 psi) or greater than 50 kPa (7.3 psi).

Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop that has the proper diagnostic testing equipment to diagnose this.

What does that mean?

The EVAP (Evaporative Emissions) System allows fuel tankmag-glass_10x10.gif vapors to be purged into the engine and burnt rather than expelled into the atmosphere as harmful emissions. The EVAP system contains a pressure sensor to check the integrity of the system. Periodically, the EVAP system performs a pressure test to check that there are no leaks in the system. It uses this sensor, also known as a fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor to check for leaks. Basically P0453 means the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) noticed the EVAP Pressure sensor or FTP is indicating a higher than normal pressure (above 4.5 Volts) in the EVAP system. NOTE: On some vehicles the FTP is a part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank.

There will likely be no noticeable symptoms along with this code other than the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), commonly known as Check Engine Light illumination. However, there may be noticeable fuel odors in some cases.
Causes

A P0453 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Open on FTP sensor signal wire
  • Short to voltage on FTP sensor signal wire
  • Bad FTP sensor
  • Abnormally high pressure in fuel tank due to blockage in EVAP purge hoses or overfilled tank
  • Loose/damaged FTP sensor connector
  • Loss of ground to the sensor
Possible Solutions

Using an scan tool access FTP sensor value with Key on Engine off (KOEO). Normal value is usually somewhere near 2.5 Volts at atmospheric pressure (may fluctuate some due to altitude). It shouldn't ever be above 4.5 Volts.

1) If it is close to 2.7V with the gas cap off, the problem is likely intermittent. Using a Digital Volt Ohm Meter, measure the voltage on the signal wire while trying to induce the problem by wiggle testing all the wiring at the FTP sensor. If the voltage fluctuates when wiggle testing, check for connector problems; i.e. water in the connector, broken or chafed wiring.

2) If the value shown on the scan tool is above 4.5V, unplug the sensor (if possible) and check for voltage again. If the high voltage is still present when unplugged, inspect wiring harness for a short to voltage on the signal wire. If the high voltage disappears when unplugging the sensor, check for a good ground to the sensor and proper reference voltage. If you have a good ground and 5 Volts reference voltage, replace the FTP sensor since it's likely shorted out.

This provides critical data needed for the Power Train Control Module (PCM) to control the Air Fuel Ratio, the Ignition Spark Timing, and many components of the Emissions Control Systems. The Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Sensor converts the Intake Manifold air pressure into a voltage that is high when the Intake Manifold air pressure is high and low when the Intake Manifold air pressure drops to a vacuum. alot of times the code you read is not the source of the problem, i suggest you check wiring to every 5 volt refference sensor on this vehicle. alot of times the a/c high pressure switch wires short approx. 2 in. inside the loom and take out the whole 5 volt ref.signal, causing multiple gohst codes, before you spend anything, unplug any 5v. sensor eg. t.p.s. and wiggle wires at all sensors while testing for 5v at t.p.s. hope this helps, as a former chrysler tech. i have been fooled by theese codes.

How do i get the trouble codes off a 1989 mazda mpv?

The above link is to a diagram of your ALDL connector, all you need is a paper clip, straighten out the paper clip and insert one end into the diagnostic test pin and one in the system ground pin (terminals A & B).

Then put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on position but DO NOT start the engine. You will then see the check engine light flash. It will initially start by flashing once, then a pause and then flash twice and it will repeat this three times. That flash sequence indicates 12, which just means the system is operating. Its the flash sequences after that that will give you the code if any are stored.

For instance if it flashes twice, then pauses, then flashes four times, thats code 24. So any flash sequence you get after the initial 12 (flash once, pause, flash twice) you need write those down. Below is a list of diagnostic codes to tell you what the codes mean.

Code 12
1 flash, pause, 2 flashes
Diagnostic: This Code will flash whenever the diagnostic terminal is grounded with the ignition switch turned on and the engine is not running.

Code 13
1 flash, pause 3 flashes
Oxygen sensor voltage stays between 0.35 and 0.55 volts for 30 seconds when the TPS signal was above 0.55 volts. The engine had been running for at least 40 seconds with an engine temperature above 110° F.

Code 14
1 flash, pause, 4 flashes
Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature of over 284° F for 4 seconds after the engine had been running for at least 10 secondsCoolant Sensor Circuit (high temperature) If the engine is experiencing overheating problems, have those fixed before continuing. Check all wiring and connectors associated with the coolant temperature sensor. Replace the Coolant temperature sensor.

Code 15
1 flash, pause, 5 flashes
Coolant Sensor Circuit (low temperature) Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature colder than -36° F for at least 4 seconds after the engine had been running for 2 seconds. See above, then check wiring connections at the ECM

Inlet air temperature sensor signal showed an air temperature of -29° F for 4 seconds. Manifold Air Temperature. Check the MAT sensor, wiring, and connectors for a possible open circuit. replace the MAT sensor.

Vehicle speed sensor signal showed less than 3 MPH for 2 seconds when engine speed was greater than 3000 RPM and transmission has not been in park or neutral for more than 4 seconds. Or vehicle speed goes from above 18 MPH to 0 in less than 2 seconds without applying brake. This code can only appear when the vehicle is in motion, if it appears when the car is not in motion, ignore it. Check ECM connections, any other problems should be diagnosed by a qualified mechanic.

Inlet air temperature sensor signal showed an air temperature of over 218° F for 5 seconds when vehicle speed was greater than 35 MPH. Check the voltage between the MAT sensor and the ECM. voltage should be above 4 volts.

The Electronic Spark Timing (EST) signal did not change when the ECM applied bypass voltage to the ignition module. Check for faulty connections, or a faulty ignition module.

4 flashes, pause, 3 flashes
Knock sensor signal was either above 3.5 volts or below 1.5 volts for at least 20 seconds. Check for a faulty knock sensor, or Mem-Cal.

Code 44
4 flashes, pause, 4 flashes
Oxygen sensor voltage was under 0.25 volts for up to 4 1/2 minutes of closed loop operation, lean exhaust. Check the ECM wiring connections. Check for vacuum leaks at the hoses and intake manifold gasket.

Code 45
4 flashes, pause, 5 flashes
Oxygen sensor voltage was over 0.75 volts for 2 minutes in closed loop operation with a throttle angle between 0.6 and 1.9 volts. Rich exhaust. Check the evaporative charcoal canister and its components for the presence of fuel.

Code 46
4 flashes, pause, 6 flashes
Power Steering pressure switch Check for faulty connections, or a faulty switch.

Code 48
4 flashes, pause 8 flashes
Misfire Diagnosis. Check the ignition and fuel systems.

Code 51
5 flashes, pause, 1 flash
Prom or Mem-Cal Make sure the MEM-Cal or prom is properly installed in the ECM. Replace Mem-Cal or prom.

Code 52
5 flashes, pause, 2 flashes
Cal-Pak Check the Cal-Pak to insure properation. replace the Cal-Pak.


Code 54
5 flashes, pause, 4 flashes
EGR #2 solenoid was out of range for 6 of 8 tests. 55 EGR #3 solenoid was out of range for 3 of 5 tests.

Code 55
5 flashes, pause, 5 flashes
ECM Check for faulty connections. Replace the ECM.

Code 56
5 flashes, pause, 6 flashes
Quad-driver voltage was incorrect for 5 seconds on the circuit connected to QDM "B".

Code 57
5 flashes, pause, 7 flashes
Boost control solenoid did not open bypass valve causing engine torque to be too high.

Code 63
6 flashes, pause, 3 flashes
EGR flow was incorrect. EGR solenoid did not work properly. Have vehicle serviced by a dealer.

Code 64
6 flashes, pause, 4 flashes
Same as Code 63 EGR flow was incorrect. EGR solenoid did not work properly.

Code 65
6 flashes, pause, 5 flashes
Same as Code 63.
