Remove starter and check for solenoid / pinion gear actuator failure. Check condition of pinion teeth and the ring gear teeth as burring of either will delay dis- engagement of the starter. Check for wiring problems in the ignition circuit including a faulty relay if there is one fitted.

SOURCE: 1997 expedition turn key on and starts it's self

Under the hood on the passenger fire wall you will see the starter solenoid.Unplug the small wire running to it and see if your problem goes away.If it does problem is ignition switch if it does not then tap the solenoid and see if it quits. If this takes care of it then solenoid is bad.

F 150 starts and starter stays engaged unplug alternator starts ok but no charge

2 problems, first you have bad starter or starter relay for starter staying engaged, keep alt plugged in has nothing to do with starter staying engauged, to test starter relay, jump at relay bat + post with red/bk wire on solonoid, if cranks over without staying engaged, then not relay or starter but rather in your ign switch, ford had bad problems with ign switch some years ago doing that

It's not a toyota tacoma it's a 90 Lexus ls400

Your starter drive is staying engaged. Either the starter has failed, or your ignition switch is keeping the starter engaged. Try moving the key back from "start" while the noise is occurring. More than likely, the starter is the culprit.
