Question about Cars & Trucks

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier. I replaced the fuel pump and now my gas gauge is going crazy. I filled it up and its only reading at half a tank. It is constantly fluctuating. How do I fix this?

I would go back to the wiring for the fuel pump to ensure that the wires for the sender unit are correctly fitted and are tight and the earth wire is connected.

SOURCE: gas gauge

The float that moves the gas hand is possibly stuck in the tank. If there's isn't an access hole in the rear of the vehicle you'll have to drop the tank. Unless it becomes free on it's own. Hope this is helpful. Please rate. Thanks

SOURCE: gas gauge reads empty but tank acts like it's full

I also have a 04 with a 1.8L. same problem. I took the fuel regulator off. It is a black box behind the rear tire under car. It only has 2 bolts to take off. After that there is a couple of vent hoses from the tank going to this box. Unplug them and 1 electrical connection. The electrical connection and one vent is connected to a T connection on the box that you can unplug by twisting on the T. Take that T off and look inside where you unplugged the hose on this T. There is a spring and a little plunger inside this tube. The plunger gets stuck. I took a little screw driver and some PB blaster and worked that plunger back and forth a couple dozen times and it unfroze. Put it back together gassed up just fine. I did not look but I was told regulator can be replaced for 200$. But a can of blaster is cheaper.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

SOURCE: 2001 chevy silverado 4.8 gas gauge not working properly

Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

The fuel sending unit is bad,it is in the tank, you may have to buy a fuel pump assy,to receive the sending unit ,if it is not available by itself.

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

2003 Chevy S10 had fuel pump replaced. When fuel gauge shows slightly below half, the gauge falls to empty and low fuel lights blinks. What could be causing this?

hi,

sounds like the sending unit rheostat(sending unit) has a bad contact or break in the resistance wire. inside the tank theres a float attached to an arm that goes to a small rheostat, like a volume control on a stereo. the rheostat is sending a scratchy signal or no signal to the computer and your getting these readings. that part is inside the gas tank, the part usually comes integrated with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to be lowered to fix it.

Why is gas gauge not working correctly since fuelpump was replaced.

Is this a flex fuel vehicle. If so, call the dealership and ask the parts dept. if there is a gauge module (perhaps behind the instrument cluster). This may be the culprit and needs to be replaced.

2004 chevy trailblazer LS EXT. My gas gauge is not reading the gas amount and it keeps moving. Gas level can be at half and as I drive it drops but when I stop it moves back to half. Fill it up to where it...

This sounds like the fuel level sensor in the gas tank is going bad, or there is a bad ground at the tank. A technician using a scan tool can monitor the actual fuel level data to verify.
Another possibility is a bad stepper motor in the instrument panel, each gauge had a stepper motor to drive the needle.

The fuel guage on my 2004 Chrysler Pacifica jumps around

This is a simple service fix. It's a glitch in the computer system. Take it to the dealer and there is some sort of code they can enter to "update" the car's computer.
Mine does it occasionaly, it annoying, but not harmful.
I've heard of some that will act up for a while, then stop, while others, have acted up and them the fuel gauge stays on empty.
Talk to the dealer.

Gas hand for 2004 chevy cavalier won't work. how can i fix this? thanx

i don't have a terrible amount of experience with fuel guage systems, but, from what i understand there is a little bobber in the gas tank which is connected to the fuel pump.

I've heard that the wires are generally exposed and can get corroded and either cause it to give "jumpy" readings or no readings at all.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to pull it out and take a look at it..., although i'd probably check for continuity (use a digital multi meter) from the wires ends connecting the guage to some part of the wires near the fuel tank so that you know if the wires are broken/shorted before you ripping into the tank to check the pump.

Hope this helps,
Thomas
