Question about 1999 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

I've had to replace three alternators in my 1999 toyota 4Runner between May 01, 2013 and Oct. 11, 2013. Original alternator, starter, and belts were replaced between March and May 01. In March the B+ connector burnt up after the original alternator was replaced. I was told it arched because it wasn't put back on correctly. The whole process took about 2 months. Eventually, May 01 my truck was finally done. The water pump went up in August and was repaired. So, since March 01, I now have a new Alternator, Starter, Belts, B pos. connector and Battery. The truck ran fine until late September when after a long drive to my beach house the Battery light came on, then after a few hours the ABS light. I had to keep jump starting the truck to get it back home, then charged it overnight, drove it to Sears for diagnosis and repair the next morning. They replaced the Alternator (under warranty) and both battery terminals. Truck ran fine for a couple weeks, then this week the battery light started coming on, again, eventually stalling the truck. Jump started it twice to get home 2 miles away. Sears replaced the alternator, and switched the negative battery connector (new, brass one) because it was installed upside down, then tested the system. Voltage was 14 at vehicle start, then slowly decreased to 12, and kept dropping. They checked fuses, and B pos. connector, again, and couldn't find anything. Suggested a couple automobile electric specialists, whom are closed until Monday. They are charging the battery so it should get me home. I don't know if this is related or not, but, the antenna motor whines and spins, but the actual antenna is broken. There are three 12v power recept's (lighter sockets) in the truck. The twin ones, located just below the stereo are not working. The third, located near the rear hatch - on the pass. side interior rear panel, below the spare storage compartment - burnt out, about a month after the two up front. The electric sunroof hasn't worked in years, although the motor does make a noise, and there's a slight click. The in-dash, factory CD changer has been broken for years, courtesy of a jammed disc. Both fog lamps are burnt out. The gas mileage is not what it used to be - averaging 215-220mi per tankful of gas (15-16 gallons). There's probably another couple burnt out lights I'm forgetting, but, this is most of what I can remember at this point. What to do?

Lead acid batteries can "die" catastrophically. This is actually not all that uncommon. If the battery is new, it should be under warranty. I would take it back, and have them test it. It it fails, which I believe it will, then there is the problem. If it passes, then your alternator is probably bad. The chances of it being your alternator are slim as you did jump the car off, and drive it for a while. If the battery is too weak to start the car, it will not maintain vehicle operation very long without help from the alternator.

This should be done with everything turned off and the door closed. with negative battery disconnected. place 12 v test light between the battery terminal and the cable end.(on neg. side) if the light lites up there is a drain. remove one fuse at a time until u see the lite go out. that is the sytem the drain is on. usually glove box light or trunk light or visor light left on or stuck on.

Installing timing belt with out timing marks on belt for toyota 4runner 3.0l v6

If the motor was running fine it would be safe to assume the timing is correct and you can make your own set of marks before you remove the original belt and use them for fitting the new belt.

Alternatively use the valve timing figures available in the technical data section of the manual. Using a degree disc can be slow and tedious but it is accurate.

Just got a 99 toyota 4runner at a steal of a price. I can't get the truck to crank over, unless I am using a starter jumper, meaning I jump it from the battery with a remote start switch. New to this...

it may be that the clutch start switch positive wire is shorted out to a ground, try to bypass the switch and see if the fuse stops blowing, if it does get an ohm meter and check each wire to ground, only the white black wire is grounded.
